It is so dry everywhere and these winds aren’t helping any either as I know you all are aware. Good morning, Banner County. Here we are on the last day of March, and where did it go? Heaven sure knows that the time is flying, but I for one am not having that much fun. However, life marches on. Pardon the pun. I don't know if any of you were able to attend the Dairyland Donkey Ball game last Monday evening, but it was great entertainment and I thank the Kimball Ranch Rodeo and the participates and sponsors. The Banner County Wrecking Crew gave it their best but lost their first match so...

  • Here Comes The Banner County Wrecking Crew!

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Mar 24, 2022

Well good morning Banner County, friends near and far. I hope this morning finds you somewhere nice, warm and windless. After a lifetime in Nebraska I am accustomed to the ups and downs of our weather, but I still don’t like it. Last weekend two important events happened that I completely forgot about. Not to mention my not mentioning the time change recently. Anyway, last Sunday, the 20th of March was the Spring Equinox and then the 21-22nd was Maslenitsa or Komodety- the day of the vernal equinox (when the day and night are equal in time ). D...

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Mar 17, 2022

Happy St. Paddys Day and good morning Banner County! Here is hoping that you all are in the right time zone this morning. I would have sent a reminder in last week’s paper but I forgot, so there you go. If it wasn’t for someone else mentioning it late Saturday night, I am pretty sure I would not have remembered until Sunday morning when I was late and off kilter. This change doesn’t come easy either, it will take me several weeks to adjust. Hope it works out better for you. You also need to be wearing that “green” today, and there will prob...

  • Hoping For A Fire-Free Week

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Sep 23, 2021

Good morning! I sincerely hope this week is fire-free. The fire that was in Scottsbluff County last week caused more damage and more smokey air for us to breathe. We are several miles away and yet Thursday evening from our deck we could see a huge orange glow that didn’t seem all that far away. Our thanks to our local firefighters that is for sure, plus many others. They sure have been busy this summer. This coming weekend will be a busy one, too. Here at home the annual Farmers Day celebration in Kimball will be held the 24-26. This year is t...

We have a few more weeks of activity before the holiday seasons are upon us, although Christmas trees and decorations are out already in some stores. Personally, I am in summer mode for as long as possible! Saturday, September 18th is a busy day with the farmers market in full s...

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Aug 12, 2021

Good morning! I hope you are well and handling the smoke as best as possible. Fire is always a terrible thing and at this point the fire just east of here has been at it for close to a week. Many firefighters have been on the scene 24/7. I am sure we can not thank each and every one of them enough. Hopefully it will be out soon. They seem to be keeping it pretty well contained at this point. This past weekend was sure a busy one. The mini bull and mutton bustin’ at the Kimball Banner County on Friday evening was quite interesting, lots of fun....

  • Seems Like School Is Just Around the Corner

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Jul 15, 2021

Good morning and nice to see that some wheat harvesting has gotten under way. I feel deeply sorry for the folks who were affected up by Alliance this past week by the the huge hail. Corn fields looked like someone had gone through them with a gigantic hacksaw. Up toward Bayard, the Chimney Rock Museum is now completely reopened. They began renovations in 2119 and had partially re-opened but the renovations are now complete! Today! July 15th the Midwest Theater will show the Free movie “Croods 2. A New Age” at 1:30 p.m. and this evening the 3rd...

  • Oregon Trail Days The Big Deal Around Here

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Jul 7, 2021

Good morning Banner County, friends near and far! Hot and dry around here and some of the wheat looks like it is ready to head to town. We might just see that begin to happen soon. Well, after two nights of rodeo and fireworks at the Bridgeport Camp Clarke Stampede and I have to say that in my humble opinion that after 30 years of going there for the 4th, they really outdid themselves this year on the fireworks show. Thanks to you, Bridgeport! More entertainment continues this week as the folks in Chadron will celebrate Fur Trade Days now throu...

  • Days About To Get Shorter, But Plenty Going On

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Jun 24, 2021

Good morning Banner County! We started this week out with a better attitude, at least around our house, due mostly to a couple of cooler days and some much needed rain. We had close to an inch of rain Sunday evening with a little small hail. Starting Monday, June 21st, the days will start to become shorter but I don’t think we will notice that too much for a while yet. Leading up to the 4th of July, we resume “Concerts in the Park” at the Gering Legion Park on Thursday evening June, 24th at 7:30 p.m. There is no admission for these conce...

  • Bless The Sweet Little Critters

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Jun 17, 2021

Good morning! June has arrived with farmers in the field, hot weather and summer celebrations! I think in a past life my husband was at the very least a relative of Johnny Appleseed because every year or so we plant & re-plant trees. Recently we planted another 250 and with this hot windy weather we can’t water them enough. The rabbits are a challenge too, bless the sweet little critters. This past weekend the Harrisburg Community Church held a pot luck dinner and enjoyed great food, friends and conversation. Soon they will be having V...

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Jun 3, 2021

Good morning Banner County! Well, after several days of cloudy unsettled weather we woke up Monday morning, Memorial Day, to beautiful blue skies and with what appears to be summer on its way. I certainly hope so because area swimming pools are opening this week! The Westmoor Pool in Scottsbluff opened Tuesday, June 1st and Gering and Alliance hope to open by the end of the week. They were scheduled to open on the 1st also but had a delay due to pool chemical shortages. Hopefully that will all be resolved and not a problem throughout the...
