  • Gearing Up For Election, Closing In On September

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Sep 22, 2022

Good morning. While we are busy planting and working the fields, fighting fires and gearing up for the upcoming election we find ourselves closing in on September. I was in one of the stores in the Bluffs recently and as the aisles progressed from the front to the back we literally went through four seasons/holidays. Fall, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Honestly, it is a bit overwhelming. Way too soon and working toward a burn out by the time for a particular season/holiday to get here. For now, I will just stick to what is going on in...

  • Remembering 9/11; Banner County Candidates Event Scheduled

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Sep 15, 2022

Good morning. Here we are in the middle of September with Labor Day and 9/11 behind us. Over this past weekend I heard a short remembrance speech about that awful day, September 11, 2001. I know we all remember exactly what we were doing at the moment we first heard the news. I had flashbacks of the 9/11 Memorial in Washington that we visited a few years ago and other destinations of destruction on that awful day. Does not seem that long ago. Movie wise, going back even further to 1986 Tom Cruise starred in “Top Gun .” Recently, after 36 yea...

  • It's Opening Day At Banner County School

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Aug 18, 2022

Good morning, Banner County. With a little rain over the weekend, Monday morning started out cloudy and cool. Kimball received over an inch and since it was fair time that came as no surprise to me. Seemed to happen on schedule when our kids were all involved. Speaking of kids, school starts here – Today, Thursday, August 18th! Grades K-12 will be loading up and some will be walking, so be aware. Bands on Bordeaux will still take place that evening in Chardon from 6-9 p.m. at Railroad Park, but I think Bands on Broadway is finished for the seas...

  • Grateful For Volunteers Fighting Wildfires

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Aug 4, 2022

Good morning, back here in a heat wave. Still not as hot as it was, and people in Texas or Missouri have the heat plus the humidity, so there is that. With a few rain showers that are hit and miss, it was really no surprise that the lightning carrying on Saturday evening started quite a fire just north of us once again. Several small fires, really. At this time (July 31), it is still going and I do not know the full extent of the damages. However, I sympathize with those who have suffered loss of any kind and want to express our gratitude to... Full story

  • The Heat Is On; Harvest Is Happening

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Jul 14, 2022

Good morning, wheat harvest is happening in Banner and Kimball counties, and others I am sure. Still green in places but it won’t be long. I heard on the radio that over the weekend the weather temperature highs were well into the three digits with 111 degrees reported in McCook. As much as I love the hot weather I do have to admit, that is too much for me! It was cooler on Monday, but then it’s back up into the 90s for quite some time to come. Good harvest weather. We start this week with music. The Bands on Broadway series will present the...

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Jun 30, 2022

Good morning, and here we are in the last week of June. The summer season has just arrived and is slipping away way to fast. I know of some harvest crews that are moving in around the Kimball area, so here before long we will see them here. The wheat close by is really green, so it may be awhile. • These Are The Days For Wind, Summer Fun

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Jun 23, 2022

Good morning! Well, wind is the word of the day. Took one of our stock tanks and folded it up like a taco shell. Not to mention sucking all moisture out of everything. So, let’s have a calmer week! Today, June 23rd, if you or anyone you know might be interested in gaining information about any military service or academy and the opportunities they have, there will be an informative session from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. during the Third District Service Academy Open House at the Leid Library in Scottsbluff. Good morning, Harrisburg, friends and family near and far. May is going out the door and June is slipping in. I sure don’t know where the time has gone. I know for certain that for me it is not because I am having a good time. We are looking at Memorial Day this weekend. Our loved ones will be remembered, specifically missed every day. However there will also be picnics, BBQs, and special family/friend gatherings, so safe travel to all. Remember this quote by Helen Keller “ Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see a shadow.” The River...

Good morning ! Here we are well into the end of May. School is Out for the summer, whoo-hoo. Our school year will end today. Plus that, some music students will head to Denver for the annual trip to Elitches on Saturday, May 21st. Finally, about four students are scheduled to attend the HPP...

  • Graduation Time & More In The Burg

    Barb Cross, The Observer|May 5, 2022

Well here we are in in Merry Month of May, Happy May Day to you! Time is sure flying and I for one am not having that much fun. On a personal level it is sometimes a steep climb, and there is a lot of confusion and disappointment in our daily lives brought on by the continuing dysfunction of the world we live in. Soon summer will be here and I am hoping to see more sun, literally. School is drawing to a close for this year for us here in Harrisburg. Graduation for the pre-K and kindergarten class (the future class of 2035, if I counted right)...

  • Boy, Do We Need Some Rain

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Apr 14, 2022

Good morning Harrisburg, friends and family near and far. Here we are in the middle of April already, and boy do we need some rain. We faced many local fires all past summer and our fire department has currently been helping at the Arapahoe fire. It is so dry everywhere and these winds aren’t helping any either as I know you all are aware. Here in the Burg at the schoolhouse, track is in full swing with the high school teams heading to Burns today, April 14th. The meet begins at 9 a.m. There is NO school today for the students, other than those...

Good morning, Banner County. Here we are on the last day of March, and where did it go? Heaven sure knows that the time is flying, but I for one am not having that much fun. However, life marches on. Pardon the pun. I don't know if any of you were able to attend the Dairyland Donkey Ball game last Monday evening, but it was great entertainment and I thank the Kimball Ranch Rodeo and the participates and sponsors. The Banner County Wrecking Crew gave it their best but lost their first match so...
