  • Farrar, City Council Say Farewells

    Daniel Thompson, Reporter|Dec 13, 2012

City Administrator Harold Farrar attended his last city council meeting the night of December 4. Farrar was sent off with a showing of gratitude and appreciation from Mayor James Schnell. “It’s been one of those things where you know when you come in that you’re going to lay the facts out on the table and say what you think, not on a personal matter, but you make sure that the City of Kimball is right up there and looking out for the city itself and you’d never do anything to harm the city,...

  • Evertson Nominated For Service Academies

    Dave Faries, Editor|Dec 13, 2012

Brian Evertson recalls the moment his mother came to Kimball High School during lunch and handed him a letter. “I opened it and the top part said something like ‘thank you for your interest,’” the senior student said. Evertson assumed--for a moment--that after a series of applications and interviews, he had not been put forward for entry into one of America’s military service academies. Instead, he learned that both Senator Ben Nelson and representative Adrian Smith nominated him to the Air Force Academy and the Naval Academy. “It’s kin...

  • Restaurants

    Dave Faries, Editor|Dec 13, 2012

I find it a tad bit disconcerting to open a menu and see “onion rings” on the first page, when its cover promised fine Mexican cooking—like buying a ticket to see Killer Mike in concert and discovering Justin Bieber is the opening act. Other anomalies dot El Torito’s glossy list, as well. But the spot on Scottsbluff’s 27th Street strip is something of an anomaly in itself. The Panhandle’s “metro area” hosts a number of mom and pop Mexican joints serving as authentic street style tacos, menudo or...

  • Drinks

    Dave Faries, Editor|Dec 13, 2012

It occurs to me that, for the approaching holidays, a specific regional wine might be in order. That’s right, something from near the Sea of Galilee, where (if a certain Good Book is consulted) water runs like sweet red vintage stuff. Yes, wine has been native to that part of the world since before Biblical times. For much of the modern era, though, varietals from France, Italy and Germany dominated even the table wine category. But ever since the emergence of New World labels in the 1990s, aficionados have been willing to branch out. And y...

  • New On DVD

    Dec 13, 2012

The premise—a toy coming to life—isn’t revolutionary. But Ted breaks from the family movie norm. As a child, John Bennett wished his favorite teddy bear would be his friend forever. Now an adult, he’s stuck with an emotionally disturbed, politically incorrect, prostitute-fancying, smack-talking toy. It’s the brainchild of “Family Guy” creator Seth MacFarlane, first time movie writer-director. And like the small screen series, you can easily bypass Ted without regrets. But (also like the series), there are moments that will simply cause you to...

  • Potter-Dix One Act Crew FInishes In Top Five At State

    Daniel Thompson, Reporter|Dec 13, 2012

The Potter Dix one act play team took home fourth place at state competitions Thursday, December 6, at the Merryman Performing Arts Center in Kearney for their play, “MacBeth: A Tale of Darkness”. “We were in a new theater which was a lot bigger and more impressive. The kids thought it was great, and they really rose to the challenge,” director Beth Bogert said. According to Bogert, it was somewhat of a bittersweet experience. “I was proud of them. They did a great job. They gave a nice performa...

  • Four Place At Banner County Wrestling Tournament

    Dave Faries, Editor|Dec 13, 2012

Kimball took home two second place medals while the Wildcats finished with a couple of thirds at the Banner County Tournament. Over some nine hours and 275 matches between wrestlers from 14 teams on Saturday, however, a few things more important than overall standings were apparent. First, early season conditioning can vault some to the top while knocking others into consolation rounds. “I tried to outmuscle him and spent all my energy in the first period,” Kimball’s Tristan Carruthers admit...

  • Kimball Girls Throttle Perkins County To Remain Unbeaten

    Dave Faries, Editor|Dec 13, 2012

Bad things usually happen when a team slips into cruise control. But the Longhorns held such a comfortable lead Friday night that a 10-0 Perkins County run in the game’s waning minutes just scratched the surface of a 47-31 home victory. “Perkins County is a good team,” head coach Ken Smith said. “You can’t be anything but happy with the win.” After the opening exchange, Kimball never fell behind. Just five minutes after the opening tip, the Longhorns had jumped out to a 14-3 advantage. The fast...

  • Longhorns Boys Outlast Plainsmen

    Dave Faries, Editor|Dec 13, 2012

Kimball did just enough to hang on for a 48-45 win over Perkins County on Friday. But point guard Zach Rockhold-O’Brien knows ‘just enough’ generally results in some form of punishment. “We’ll have to do some running for that,” he said, referring to the team’s lackluster 7 for 15 free throw shooting mark in the final period. Their efforts from the floor began to sail off target, as well. Kimball’s offense went 0 for eight minutes away from the line. “The shots stopped falling,” Rockhol...

  • Potter Dix Boys Fall To Creek Valley, Paxton

    Daniel Thompson, Reporter|Dec 13, 2012

The Potter-Dix Coyotes couldn’t keep up with the Paxton Tigers in their December 8 game. The Tigers quickly took the lead in the first half of the game, scoring their first 4 points before Trevor Harms was able to put Potter-Dix on the board off a pass from Kyle Gorsuch. The Coyotes tried to stop the Tigers offense with a full court press, but it had little effect. Yet the Coyotes were able to build a small comeback at the end of the first quarter when Gorsuch hit a three pointer pulling the C...

  • Potter Dix Girls Split In Weekend Play

    Daniel Thompson, Reporter|Dec 13, 2012

The Potter-Dix Varsity Girls team started off strong against the Paxton Tigers on December 8. Unfortunately, they could not keep the momentum going the rest of the game. Kaidee Livingstone put the Coyotes on the board from the free throw line with 7:16 left to go in the first quarter with Conner Wolff pushing the Coyotes to an early lead with four points of her own leaving the score at 5-2 with 6:44 left to go in the first quarter. The Tigers quickly started to cut away at the Coyotes lead with...

  • Athletes Of The Week

    Dec 13, 2012

Caleb Reuter Kimball forward Caleb Reuter battled the big Perkins County back line effectively enough to tally a double-double. The senior scored 11 points and nabbed a team leading 10 rebounds on the night. He also knocked the ball away for two steals. Darbi Klinkhammer Against Perkins County, Klinkhammer did it all. She led the team with 14 points, she totaled 9 assists, many to Shelby Vogel and grabbed 4 rebounds. Defensively, she stole the ball 5 times, converting two of these into...

  • Years Ago

    Dec 13, 2012

One Year Ago December 2011 Potter-Dix earned fourth place in last week’s state one-act competition, held in Kearney. “It was a good competition and we gave our best performance ever,” said the cast’s coach, Beth Bogert. Indeed, only two points separated Potter-Dix and their production of “Messiah on the Frigid- aire” from third place Wausa. Taylor Holz was named D-1 Best Ac-tress, while Holz, Dustin Brown, Kenna Smith, Josiah Hermes, Kevin Maes and Tiffany LaBeau received ‘outstanding’ recognition--more actors and actresses in that distinctio...

They began their final three game swing with a 29-16 win over Bayard, Alex Reader (12 points) and Kaylyn Nelson (6 points) doing much of the damage. They were helped by Hannah Biesecker and Justine Heeg, who combined to put 7 on the board. Lila Moore and Crystal Pile rounded out the scoring.
