  • Kimball board reviews tiny houses

    Dawn Fossand|Jun 23, 2016

Tiny houses are a trend sweeping the nation, according to thetinylife.com, this is a social movement where people choose to downsize the space they live in, often for the obvious long-term financial benefits, but also due to the freedom gained by diminished home-owner responsibilities. While the typical American home is approximately 2,600 square feet, tiny houses typically range between 100 and 400 square feet, according to the website. These tiny homes come in many designs and can be purchased in a kit. The Kimball Planning Commission met on...

  • Shopping locally = community support

    Dawn Fossand|Jun 23, 2016

The Director of the Kimball-Banner County Chamber, Jo Caskey, is concerned about the future of Kimball, if it’s residents don’t take the issue of shopping locally seriously. “Shopping in Kimball, not only supports local businesses,” she explained, “it supports jobs for people who live here.” Caskey understands that most of the nation’s economy has been affected by the drop in oil prices and higher unemployment rates but, states that we, as citizens in Kimball, can make a difference in our local economy. “It is our local businesses that...

This is a big year for the Andy Shaw Memorial Softball Tournament – it is 10 years old. The tournament first began as a fundraising effort for its namesake, Andy Shaw, according to his mom, Patty. "About five months before his 21st birthday, Andy was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma," Shaw said. "He was fighting it, and he went to Denver for a stem cell transplant and some of his friends decided to have a co-ed softball game to raise money for his medical bills. It wasn't that Andy was that b...

Men’s Health Month heightens the awareness of preventable health problems and encourages early detection and treatment of disease among men and boys. • Support the American dream, shop locally

    Penny Merryfield|Jun 23, 2016

Owning your own business was the American Dream for years. Due to the availability of big box stores who buy in bulk so they may “pass” the savings on to the consumer, the little hometown stores are suffering. However, these big box stores do not support our local economy. For example: for every $100 spent in our hometown, $73 remains in the local economy, and $27 goes out. A non-hometown business will keep approximately $43 with $57 leaving. Our hometown businesses are the backbone of Kimball’s economy. They are local investors that are commi...

  • Letter to the editor

    Jun 23, 2016

On June 9th I had the privilege of accompanying the Western Nebraska Honor Flight from Chadron to Denver and on to Washington, D.C. Our trip took us through Kimball where we received a warm welcome and ice cold water to drink. We didn’t get the names of the family who brought water, but please know how much we appreciated you! Our welcome and reception did not go unnoticed. When we arrived in Washington, D.C., both the Chairman of the Lone Eagle Veteran’s Honor Flight and the man who started Honor Flight told us they had heard about our tri...

  • Letter to the editor

    Jun 23, 2016

Why can’t Kimball attract better neighbors? Is it because our apathy is so contagious that they fit right in? In the many years I have made this city my home I have watched it steadily deteriorate with seemingly no effort to stop the blight. We have abandoned storefronts and homes. Dirt lots are overrun with weeds. Broken down homes and a desolate church are owned by careless Kimball residents who haven’t an ounce of civic pride. All these and more ruin the landscape of a once vibrant community. I implore the city attorney, mayor, city cou...
