Jock Talk

A busy weekend ahead for you sports fans with the Andy Shaw Memorial Co-ed Softball Tournament and the TeamMates Four Person Golf Scramble ready to entertain you.

This is the 10th annual Andy Shaw Memorial Softball Tournament and it is going to be a good one. When I talked with organizer Kevin Wynne earlier this week he said they already had 12 teams entered and they would still take late entries if you have a team you want to get signed up. The 1st place prize money is ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS!

This is a two day tournament with play set for Saturday and Sunday beginning at 8 a.m. both days. All proceeds go to our local people fighting cancer. Come out for a weekend of fun, food, music, and games. For more info, contact Kevin Wynne at 308-241-0963, or Carrie Wynne at 308-241-2009.

Another great project this Saturday is the annual TeamMates Four Person Golf Scramble. This takes place at the beautiful Four Winds Golf Course with lunch being served at 12:30 and a shotgun start time of 1:30 p.m. Cost is just $60 per player which gets you lunch plus an attractive golf shirt and lots of flag prizes and some very nice flight prizes. Come support a great program designed to help our area young people. Call 308-235-4241 to sign up.

If you picked up an Observer on Wednesday evening, you still have time to remember the Kimball Junior Legion Baseball Team is playing at home this evening (Wednesday) hosting Alliance for a double header with game times of 5 and 7 p.m. On June 29 they are home again with Imperial coming to town for games at 4 and 6 p.m. On Saturday, July 2, they close out the regular season at home with Morrill coming to Kimball for games at 2 and 4 p.m.

Concerning the local junior golfers, Payton Wise and Cole Henton competed in the Master’s Drive-Chip-Putt competition held at the Ft Collins, Colorado Country Club Golf Course this past week. Payton finished 5th overall taking 1st in the driving, 3rd in chipping, and 8th in putting. Cole was 16th in his division placing 18th in driving, 7th in both chipping and putting.

Switching from golf to basketball despite the fact it is mid-summer. Coach Chauncey Pedersen took 18 Kimball girls to a Girl’s Basketball Team Camp at Northern Colorado University in Greeley this past week. The three day camp from Thursday thru Saturday gave Kimball’s two teams 7 games each.

A team of 8th thru 10th grade players went 3 and 4 losing some close games and winning some tough battles. The older girls from 10 thru 12 grade finished 4 and 3 and went up against some very large schools including Pueblo with over 1,000 student enrollment.

Coach Pedersen said “We exceeded my expectations. We still have a lot to work on to get to where we want to be, but I am excited. Our chemistry was good among all of our players. We had only 1 senior with us and some of our girls we expect to contribute were not able to make the camp.” Pedersen said they will have some scrimmages with other schools yet this summer and will have open gym night on Thursdays and will hold two workouts on Monday.

A quick switch back to golf. Four Winds Pro Chad Wise has asked me to let you golfers know that when he sounds the warning horn at the Four Winds Course to alert golfers that there is lightning in the area and he wants all golfers off the course, this is exactly what he means. GET OFF THE COURSE AND STOP GOLFING. People do get struck with lightning on golf courses and it is for your safety.
