Phil's Forecast Would Be Different In Nebraska

Banner County

Good morning! It’s February but feels like May! Least for awhile, and how about that Punsutawney Phil? If he were here in Nebraska I do believe his weather predictions would be quite different, but I still have high odds for more winter. Safer that way.

Well, here at home on February 1st we have the annual spelling bee at the school at 12:30 p.m. and everyone is invited to go watch. Also the high school wrestling team will be competing at a MAC conference tournament in Bridgeport.

That evening the Western Nebraska Art Center will host an open house for a new display, “Image 2024 Photography.” Everyone is invited to join them between 5-7 p.m. and this display will be available through February 25th.

On February 2nd, Friday, the high school varsity basketball teams will travel to Minatare, with the girls playing at 5:30 p.m. and the boys at 7 p.m.

On Feb. 2, the Midwest Theater will begin the showing of the movie “Wonka” at 1:30 p.m. followed by more showings at 7 p.m. that evening and on the 3rd at 7 p.m. and the 4th at 1:30 p.m.

There is a lot going on Saturday the 3rd. Our Speech team will be spending the day in Chadron, the wrestling team will be at Southeast, and here at home the boys varsity basketball team will take on Sioux County at 1 p.m.

Also on Feb. 3, The Music & Movement classes for toddlers and pre-K kids will be at 9650 O street in Gering at 9 a.m. There also will be a meeting of The Family Nature Club at the Elks Shelter at Riverside Park in Scottsbluff at 10 a.m. Their topic of discussion will be “Animals In Winter,” and if you are interested in being involved join them!

The Winter Farmers Market will be open between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the Legacy of the Plains Museum; and there will be a Valentine Vendor get-together in Alliance at 615 E. 3rd between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Still on the 3rd, the Gering Public Library will host The Year of the Dragon with speaker Yi Ju Ting, who teaches Mandarin in Scottsbluff. Join them at 1:30 p.m.

On Sunday, February 4th, some (or all) of the band students will be heading to Chadron for the High Plains Band competition, which will be on the 5th and 6th.

On Monday the 5th, the girls and boys middle school basketball teams will head to Minatare, where the girls will compete at 1 p.m. and the boys at 2 p.m. The varsity teams will be at home challenging Creek Valley, with the girls game at 5 p.m. and the boys game at 6:30 p.m.

The next day these two teams will travel to Crawford with the girls playing at 5 p.m. and the boys also at 5 p.m.

Good luck and safe travel to all of you, including those spellers.

Take care until next time, Barb Cross at 436-7152.
