The 7th graders cruised 31-16, behind Jordan Greenwood’s 16 point night, with quite a bit of help from Jaden Withrow. “I saw some good things for the first game out,” said coach Dane Wurdeman. “Defense was a key.” In the 8th grade contest, Kimball rambled to a 34-11 win. Cole Christensen led the way with 22 pints, followed by Ethan Land, who knocked in six. “I was really proud of my boys,” observed coach Michele Daum. “Angel Flores, Tre...

Several ladies joined in celebrating the arrival of our newest community member, Miss Sierra Sue Johnson with a baby shower held Sunday, December 30, at the Harrisburg Community Church. Mom Stacy allowed us to take turns holding this beautiful little one and I think we all had a great time. Sierra tolerated each of us and simply slept the entire time. Many wonderful and useful gifts were received and a nice strawberry dessert was enjoyed also! I have not paid much attention to baby items for a while (since our last baby shower) and was...

It was in the late spring month of June, the year 1847, in Summerville, Mississippi that an African slave woman known only as ‘King’ gave birth to a son. She named him Bose. Who his father was is unknown but some suspected that King’s master, Dr. Milton Ikard was the most likely sire. However, whether by custom or by lineage, the little boy child, born into slavery on that spring day would be officially recorded as Bose Ikard. In 1852, when Bose was five years old, Dr. Ikard moved his entire family, including his slave family, to western Parke... Full story

  • Veterans History Project: Daniel Kinnison

    Larry Nelson, Veterans History Project|Jan 10, 2013

By March 1944, World War II was being fought on many fronts, costing thousands of lives and even more injuries. There was progress being made in Europe as well as in the islands in the Pacific. Less than six months before, Roosevelt, Churchill, and Stalin met to coordinate plans to smash German forces and their nasty leader. The Russians had driven the German Forces out of Leningrad. Big things were in the works. Daniel E. Kinnison was a strapping 20 year old man who knew that the Selective Service System was active in the northern Colorado...

January 2012 Contrary to conventional wisdom, irrigated corn in Nebraska is highly efficient in the use of energy, water and fertilizer, say University of Nebraska-Lincoln scientists whose research found that increased yields more than offset the energy cost of these inputs. This research has important ramifications for agriculture’s efforts to meet increasing global needs for food, feed, fuel and fiber on existing farmland, said Ken Cassman, UNL agronomist who holds the university’s inaugural Robert B. Daugherty Professorship. Cassman and Pat...

The military activity in Dakota Territory during the final days of December 1890 included the 7th U.S. Cavalry and the 8th U.S Cavalry. Their intended purpose was to track down the bands of Sioux who had left their respective reservations. Indians who stayed within the boundaries of their reservations were considered friendlies. Those who were not on the reservations were labeled as hostiles and were to be rounded up and returned by force, when needed, and by deadly force if necessary. Many of Spotted Elk’s Miniconjou, Sitting Bull’s Hun... Full story

January 2012 When an electrical component fails to do what it is supposed to do, trouble inevitably follows. Kimball’s city administrator Harold Farrar and Bob Selzer of the Nebraska Municipal Power Pool (NMPP) know this fact well--as does anyone driving past the stilled wind farm outside of town. Recently a recloser attached to the turbines malfunctioned. As the purpose of a recloser is to shut faulty circuit breakers and ensure continued flow of power, the incident allowed a surge that blew a city breaker. When that went down it caused an o... Full story

As I sit down to write this last newsletter of 2012, I cannot help but remember when we on the brink of the new century, back in 1999. Some folks were pretty sure that the world was coming to an end. And most recently of course all of the hoopla about the Mayan calendar and the same fear in the hearts of some folks once again. And here we are!! Ushering in 2013--it just doesn’t seem like twelve years have passed this this century began. The time just keeps going faster and faster. I for one am really in the need of this Christmas break from s...

Sitting Bull, his son Crow Foot and fourteen other Sioux, had been killed in a botched attempt to arrest him on December 15, 1890. Stunned by his death and fearful of reprisal approximately 200 of his Hunkpapa band left the Standing Rock Reservation to join the Miniconjou Sioux at the Cheyenne River Reservation. The Miniconjou band was under the leadership of Chief Spotted Elk. The attempted arrest was based on the false assumption that Sitting Bull was a leader and instigator of the recent Ghost Dance religion. The Ghost Dance was a ceremony...

  • The Last Surrendering Sioux

    Tim Nolting, Columnist|Dec 20, 2012

In the pre-dawn hour of December 15, 1890, a squadron of more than twenty Indian Police roughly wakened Sitting Bull. Rudely escorted from his home, not even allowed the dignity to cover his naked body, Sitting Bull protested his unwarranted arrest. Careless, though passionate, shots were fired in defense of Sitting Bull and the fearful tribal police responded by killing the great Sioux Chief with one bullet in his back, one bullet in his head. While he lay in the spreading pool of blood, his home was searched and a young man was found still...
