I hope everyone enjoyed the terrific warm weather that we had over the past week. Although we have had more average temperatures for the last several days, I think it will warm up again somewhat. My yard is full of tumble weeds. I have no use for them and personally think they are a pain. We also had a smidgeon of rain one day and it reminded me that it still can happen, here in terribly dry Banner County! Last Sunday the Banner County Volunteer Fire Department hosted a soup lunch and silent auction for Tom Neal and his family. The weather was...

Don and Connie Onigkeit prove that one does not have to run into burning buildings or serve in the military to be a hero and save a life, but rather one can be a hero to someone by simply donating blood. The Kimball couple has been donating blood for approximately 25 years with Connie reaching the 100 donation mark, which adds up to 12 and a half gallons of blood, the day after Christmas this past year. “They say you save three lives with each unit, and one time they did tell me it was for a baby so that made me feel good,” Connie said. The...

Ingensoll was transported from the 610 Washington residence and taken to Kimball Health Services by ambulance. The victim was then t...
Boy oh boy, has this month been a busy one! It seems like when school is in session we are all in perpetual motion, and believe me sometimes my personal motion is pretty s-l-o-w! The nicer weather has sure helped my attitude although I would dearly love some rain! Birthday folks this week include: Travis Cochran, Nathan Rogers, Reta Pahl, Camy Anderson, Larry Malm, Toria McGowan, Owen Gifford, Nathaniel McGowan, Corwin Bunny-Moore, Marie Parker, Louise Person, and Ronald Kennedy. Since I was unable to attend the village meeting last week, here’s a quick summary I got from board chairman Tim Nolting. He said the meeting was short and they only covered a few items of business. The board accepted a bid on the metal roofing material that was removed from the shop building when the hail damage was repaired. They voted to file their periodic road maintenance report. Rick reported that they are still having electrical problems with one of the water pumps. The village also decided to see if they can get funding to replace t...
On the night of September 9, 1878 the last remnants of Northern Cheyenne, under the leadership of Chief’s Dull Knife and Little Wolf, jumped the Darlington reservation on the northern banks of the Canadian River. The 700-mile journey, that they would make, created a legacy of remarkable courage, determination and human endurance. That same journey would also leave in its path a bitter legacy of violence, bloodshed and brutal revenge. Perhaps it will always be that among those who seek peace and quiet refuge there will also be those who only s...

January 2012 Kelly Meehan-Ash, 24, is being tried as an assessory to murder in connection with the murder trial of Vencill Ash III. When the trial for Ash III was pushed back in date, the Meehan-Ash case was likewise rescheduled. Meehan-Ash made a request to her attorney, Donald Miller of Sidney, to be moved to a different facility stating that she did not feel “safe” in the Kimball County jail, located in the courthouse. Meehan-Ash stated that because of the seriousness of her charges, that she feared someone might want to harm her. According...
Greetings to all in Banner County, friends near and far. My wish for us all is a little more moisture, not quite such freezing temperatures. The snow with blowing winds caused an earlier school closure last Friday in at least two schools, including Banner County and several sports activity postponements. It has slowly but surely been getting warmer all week long. I must confess, I have not looked into the weather forecast at all. The boys varsity basketball MAC tournament semifinals should begin today, and for more information please call the...

This past week has been one of unseasonably mild weather. With temperatures having been in the above average range of upper thirties and lower forties, our light jacket days came to an abrupt halt this past Friday when a well-predicted cold front barreled through the panhandle. Heavy, moisture-laden fog drew a grey curtain over the early morning sunrise and settled in a frozen layer of slick mist on every exposed surface. As crystal flakes began to fall, a gusty northwest wind whipped the flurry of snow into a brief, but threatening blizzard....
The family of Laura Nelson wishes to express their deep appreciation to the community for the outpouring of support given through cards of sympathy, in heartfelt letters and with the generous contributions to Mom’s memorial. These donations to the NSEA Children’s Fund will help a local child. Mom would be pleased to be continuing to promote education, which was always so important to her. We’d also like to thank the ladies of Prairie West Christian Church for preparing and serving the food at the family luncheon following the funeral. We will...
Former Kimballite, Rochael Soper recently published “Out of Hell and Into Healing”, a book written from personal experience of the struggles that often accompany growing up with an alcoholic parent--and painfully witnessing the abuse of others in the family. She began writing the book in 2003 as a way of trying to heal from her past. “Is there anything more frightening to a child, than seeing a parent suffer humiliation and violence at the hands of another parent?” she asks in one passage...

January 2012 Kimball’s Junior High boys basketball squad swept Burns on Monday night in their season openers. The 7th graders cruised 31-16, behind Jordan Greenwood’s 16 point night, with quite a bit of help from Jaden Withrow. “I saw some good things for the first game out,” said coach Dane Wurdeman. “Defense was a key.” In the 8th grade contest, Kimball rambled to a 34-11 win. Cole Christensen led the way with 22 pints, followed by Ethan Land, who knocked in six. “I was really proud of my boys,” observed coach Michele Daum. “Angel Flores, Tre...
Several ladies joined in celebrating the arrival of our newest community member, Miss Sierra Sue Johnson with a baby shower held Sunday, December 30, at the Harrisburg Community Church. Mom Stacy allowed us to take turns holding this beautiful little one and I think we all had a great time. Sierra tolerated each of us and simply slept the entire time. Many wonderful and useful gifts were received and a nice strawberry dessert was enjoyed also! I have not paid much attention to baby items for a while (since our last baby shower) and was...
It was in the late spring month of June, the year 1847, in Summerville, Mississippi that an African slave woman known only as ‘King’ gave birth to a son. She named him Bose. Who his father was is unknown but some suspected that King’s master, Dr. Milton Ikard was the most likely sire. However, whether by custom or by lineage, the little boy child, born into slavery on that spring day would be officially recorded as Bose Ikard. In 1852, when Bose was five years old, Dr. Ikard moved his entire family, including his slave family, to western Parke...

By March 1944, World War II was being fought on many fronts, costing thousands of lives and even more injuries. There was progress being made in Europe as well as in the islands in the Pacific. Less than six months before, Roosevelt, Churchill, and Stalin met to coordinate plans to smash German forces and their nasty leader. The Russians had driven the German Forces out of Leningrad. Big things were in the works. Daniel E. Kinnison was a strapping 20 year old man who knew that the Selective Service System was active in the northern Colorado...
