Tuesday morning Kimball had its newest police officer sworn in at the City Council chambers. Katherine Terrill, the city clerk and deputy treasurer, swore in Joel Mauer. Mauer is finishing up his last month of training and will start at the police academy in April. For 12 years he served as a police officer in Massachusetts, including five years under cover. The Kimball School Board opened its special meeting at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 16 and adjourned in just 10 minutes. Only two items were on the agenda to be discussed and considered, but one was of great importance. The first item that the six board members discussed was the approval of a contract with the National Association of School Boards to conduct a search for a superintendent to replace Elizabeth Owens, who plans to step down July 1. Virgil Alan "Al" Combs, 84, of Potter, passed away on Friday, December 13, 2019 at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff, NE. Sirens were blaring all over town Saturday afternoon, but it wasn't an emergency. It was the annual Shop with a Cop extravaganza. Fifty-four children from kindergarten to the sixth grade were selected to be the beneficiaries of Shop with a Cop, while 40 children attended the event. The final weekend of High School sports action is this weekend before the NSAA Moratorium begins on Sunday, December 22, when Nebraska schools are required to hold no practices, or compete in competition until after Christmas. The Kimball High Wrestlers had a busy weekend with two tournaments back to back on Friday and Saturday of this past week. On Friday they wrestled at the North Platte St Pats Tournament and on Saturday they were at the Charlie Lake Tournament at Cheyenne East. Carina Chen, from Shanghai, China, is one of the five foreign exchange students at Kimball High School. Placed through the STS Foundation which has a goal to provide educational exchanges for young people wishing to visit the United States. Chen was placed with Dawn Hickman and Robert Hinton and their seven-year-old son, Noah. "They are just like family," Chen said with a smile aimed at Dawn.
