    Those driving down the I-80 will no doubt have a new landmark in their line of vision near Kimball. Last Wednesday, the Kimball oil derrick was raised and placed on land out by the golf course. The BW Drilling Company used the derrick in the 1960s and 1970s. After that time, the company donated it to the City of Kimball. It did so because oil is a big part of the history and heritage of Kimball. The derrick itself was built in 1949 in Texas, and was brought to Kimball by BW Drilling. The...

  • Food drive success: Students collect over 1,000 pounds of food for pantry

    On Oct. 11, 30 students and five adults from the Kimball community distributed 1,000 bags and flyers to houses and apartments in Kimball. A week later, on Oct. 18, another group of 30 students and seven adults picked the filled bags up and helped restock the local food pantry. The residents of Kimball responded by donating over one ton of food and household items towards this event. A little over 2,200 pounds was donated to the effort.     Geraldine Brown, 92, of Kimball, died at the Kimball County Manor on Friday, Oct. 17, 2014. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 21, at the Cantrell Funeral Home in Kimball with Pastor Alan Foutz officiating. Burial was held in the Kimball Cemetery.     Ryan Muneio will be Kimball High's lone state qualifier after finishing 9th at the D-6 District Cross Country meet held at Grant this past Thursday.     John McConnell, left, who set a Kimball High career rushing record, was on hand Friday at Hershey to watch Jonathan Withrow add to his career rushing stats with his 30 carry and 193 yard effort in the win over Hershey. McConnell set the school record of 2,611 yards on 492 carries back in 1992.     Potter-Dix rolled to a big 56-12 road win last Friday at South Platte. The Coyotes scored all of their 56 points in the first half to improved to 4-3 overall and 3-1 in district play. “We played really well and got a lead early and then played the few younger players we have,” coach Dale Frerichs said. “We also tried some kids at different positions in the second half.” The Coyotes put up 374 yards of offense - 214 on the ground and 160 through the air - in the big win.     Potter-Dix posted a 3-3 volleyball record in matches plaits last week. The Lady Coyotes picked up two wins against Garden County and one against South Platte.
