Summer Is Here With A Heatwave & Fun, Fun, Fun In Every Direction

Good morning! Well summer is officially underway and boy has it arrived with a heat wave. With 90 degree plus pretty much all of this week, well here we go!

Today is Thursday, June 22nd and we are looking at a busy weekend.

Today at the Leid Library in Scottsbluff and through Saturday, the teen advisory Council will host a last Escape Room session, “Mystery of the Missing Podcaster.” Teams of up to 6 people are invited to enter for a one hour time slot. Please call either 308-630-6290 or 308-630-6250 to choose your time.

Later that evening the Gering City Band will be performing at Legion Park, 2nd & N streets. They will begin at 7:30 p.m. Bring a blanket or lawn chair!

Also on the 22nd the 18th Street Plaza will have music by The Greendales and Hooks and the Huckleberries, they will begin to entertain you at 6 p.m. Bring a chair!

The Legacy of the Plains Museum is hosting the Oregon Trail Wagon Train on Friday, June 23rd. More information is available at 436-1989. However, I know that the doors will open at 5 p.m. with wagon rides, wooden horse roping, live animals, a cow pie toss, crafts, and pedal tractors for entertainment until the dinner bell rings at 6:30 p.m.

On that same day (in the evening!) Robidoux Rendezvous Downtown Gering, Strange Americans will perform at 6:30 p.m.

Saturday, June 24th is the beginning of a very busy weekend, in just about any direction you want to go.

Heading west, LaGrange is having their annual Mini Fair Saturday June 24th beginning at 7 a.m. with breakfast in the park, a 5k run, parade and gymkhana. More information is available at 307-575-0291.

Heading in the opposite direction,the Potter Car Bowl celebration begins on Friday evening the 22nd at 5 p.m. with bounce houses, a beer garden, and BBQ contest. On Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., some events will include a craft fair, silent auction, train rides, hot line demonstration by High West Energy, a live auction, and music. There will also be a fantastic car show with cars, trucks, and cycles, plus duckpin bowling.

Sunday there will be open mic at the Hangar 39 beginning at 2 p.m. to round out the weekend. Also on the 24th the Wildcat Hills Nature Center will host a program, “Powerful Pollinators,” with information on Bumble bees and more. This will begin at 9 a.m.

A little further north and over the hill, the 18th Street Market will be open at the 18th Street Plaza between 8 and 11 a.m.

Theater entertainment this week includes two performances at Theater West. “The Odd Couple Female Version” will be on the 22nd and the 24th, both at 7:30 p.m. The SkyView Drive-In will have a Retro Weekend with “Looney Tunes: Back in Action” on the 23rd and ‘Inkheart ‘ on the 25th. Gates open at 8:30 p.m. with show time at 9:10 p.m.

Sunday the 25th Theatre West will host a Garden Walk and tickets must be purchased in advance. The walk will take place from 4-8 p.m.

On Tuesday, June 27th the folks at the North Platte Natural Resource District will hold a Little’s Wild Workshop. This will be at 9 a.m. for one hour and for kids ages 4-10 years of age.

Down south, Kimball Public Library has its summer reading programs in full swing and on the 23rd the pre-school session “Kindness” will be at 10:30 a.m. On the 28th there will be a Pool Party at the local pool from 10:30 a.m. until noon, when lunch will be served. This is for all ages, not just K-6th. Sign up at the library for the pool party.

I will close with two Heads Ups!

On the 29th, next Thursday, the Free kids movie at the Midwest Theater is ‘The Amazing Maurice’ at 1:30 p.m. and two concerts will be at the Gering Civic Plaza. “Drums of the World” will be at 1 p.m. (more adult orientated ) and at 3 p.m. will be for the kids.
