School Once Again In Session ... And Actually In The Building

August 20, 2020

For The Observer

No trees, no problem! This mountain lion was sighted hanging out this past week near Lyman! A farmer heard something moving around overhead, looked around and saw the big cat up there.

Good morning Banner County, friends near and far. Here we are in the middle of August and school once again is in session, and actually in the building! Good luck to each and everyone of you in this coming year as you will have many new challenges.

There will be NO school on Friday, August 21st for students. This past weekend was one filled with Babies and Balloons, definitely each a whole lot of fun! Did you make it to any of the Hot Air Balloon activities?

We managed to find a craft fair in there also and speaking of that, this year as you know the annual Oregon Trail Days usually held in July in Geiring was postponed. Well, this weekend a shortened version will take place on Friday and Saturday, August 21st and 22nd. There will be NO Parade! Bummer.

However, on Friday there will be an Art Show at the Legacy of the Plains Museum from noon until 9 p.m. and a Rod & Custom Car Show on 10th street from 5-9 p.m. and then events for Saturday will include: a continuance of the Art Show from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. plus a Craft Fair, food, and entertainment in the Legion Park from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Earlier in the day, at 7 a.m. out at the Scotts Bluff Monument, there will be a Hill Climb and for this registration begins at 6 a.m. and Horseshoe competition at the Oregon Trail Park beginning at 1 p.m. Also, on the 22nd the American Legion will offer lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. & dinner 5-9 p.m. All open to the public.

Okay, before the weekend! The Annual Field Day and Technology Tour out at the Panhandle Research and Extension Center will be on the 20th. They will partner with the Nebraska Bean Growers Association and highlight the most current research data on dry beans, sugar beets, corn and other crops. This is offered Free and you are welcome to spend the day, or parts of it. Lunch will be served and plot tours will be from 9:30 a.m. to noon with presentations beginning after lunch until 2 p.m.

Also on Thursday, August 20th at the Carnegie Arts Center, 204 4th Street, in Alliance as part of the Tune's N Blooms series Open Mic/Jam Night will take place from 7-10 p.m. This is Free and open to the public, just bring your chair and instrument! If you need more information please call 308-760-1406.

The next GROBigRed Virtual Learning program through the Nebraska Extension with Zoom will be held on Tuesday, August 25th at 6 p.m. and will be on Tree Selection.

Dates for area Farmers Markets are: Morrill & Torrington on the 20th; Morrill 22nd; Gering 24th; Morrill 25th; and Bridgeport the 26th.
