Subdistrict Title Game Next For Lady Longhorns

Kimball Comes From Behind Vs. Hemingford, Beats Perkins County

The Kimball High Lady Longhorns won in Subdistrict on Tuesday night, Feb. 18, beating Perkins County, 46-31.

This means that the Longhorns next play in the Subdistrict Championship game 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, against South Platte at Ogallala.

A few days earlier, the Kimball girls picked up a conference win over visiting Hemingford Friday night coming from behind at half time to win out 45-41. It was a close, and exciting contest, the entire game and a fitting finish for Kimball's two seniors who were playing their final game on their home court, referring to senior starters Carli Wurdeman and Jenna Greenwood.

The visting Lady Bobcats jumped out to a 10-5 lead after the first quarter of play and led 19-14 at halftime. Kimball took the lead at 27-26 after 3 quarters of play with Sam Bemis feeding Carli Wurdeman with a pair of back-to-back passes that led to baskets by Carli Wurdeman, with the last bucket coming with :03 seconds left in the quarter and was a 3 point play as Wurdeman was fouled and made the free throw.

It was a rough and tumble affair that resembled indoor football at times. Early in the fourth period, Wurdeman went to the foul line to shoot technical foul shots that lifted Kimball to a 29-26 lead.

Kimball improved their margin to 38-30 on a 15 foot jumper by Bemis, but Hemingford closed it back to 44-41 with :11 seconds to play. Bemis made a free throw with 5.6 seconds showing to end the scoring, and then fouled out with :03 seconds to play. Hemingford missed both foul shots and Jenna Greenwood pulled down the rebound to end the game and secure the win.

An awesome night for junior Sam Bemis who led Kimball scoring with 17 points making 5 of 7 shots from the field and 7 of 10 at the foul line. She also was tops in rebounds with 8, in steals with 6, and assists with 4. If we are handing honorary game balls, pass it Sam Bemis' way. Carli Wurdeman also in double figure scoring with 15 including 2 treys and was 5/8 at the line. Sydney Biesecker had 8 with 1 trey, Katie Heeg 4, Peyton Wise 1.

In team stats, Kimball was 12/34 from the field for 35%, 3/10 on 3 pointers for 30%, and 18/27 at the foul line for 67%. They pulled 19 rebounds, had 12 steals, 7 assists, 24 fouls, and 26 turnovers.

Hemingford only had 1 trey, was 8/26 at the line, and also had 24 fouls called. The Lady Bobcats had 7 players score led by Avery Davies with 12, Kamryn Ash 9, Catherine Bryner 7, Liz Mayer 6, Katelyn Varner 3, Kyla Walker 2, and Makenzy Chancelor 2.

With the win, Kimball closed out the regular season play with a record of 7 wins and 12 losses. They moved into sub-district tournament play at Ogallala this past Tuesday where they were to face Perkins County in first round play.
