Hornets Sting Longhorns

In Tuesday night basketball action at Pine Bluffs, the night belonged to the hosting Hornets as they dominated Kimball in both he girls and boys contests. The Lady Hornets won over Kimball 58-23 and the Pine Bluffs boys won over Kimball 85-48.

The Pine Bluffs girls are very tall and talented once again with three 6 footers and 4 seniors in their starting lineup, along with some smooth back court guards to give them all around strength, such as sophomore Jaden Shelit who started the game scoring with a trey and put up 3 treys and scored 14 points in the first quarter to give the Lady Hornets a 21-6 lead at the 1st quarter break. She ended the night as high scorer for both teams with 25 points! Pine cruised to the win leading 35-14 at half time and 56-16 at the end of 3 quarters.

Along with Shelit’s 25 points, Maddie Fornstrom had 9, Sophie Howard 8, Meagan Madden 6, Hyleigh Fornstrom 4, Dylan Sweeter 4, and Savannah Norman 2. The winners were 9/17 at the foul line and had 12 fouls.

Not a good night for the Kimball girls who were up against a bigger and more dominating club. Kimball’s top scorer was Mean Spicer with 10 points. Sydney Biesecker finished 7 with 1 trey, Payton Wise and Maddie Merryfield had 2 each, and Sam Bemis and Carli Wurdeman 1 each. Kimball was 6/11 at the foul line for 55%. They pulled just 17 rebounds, had 2 blocks, 8 steals, 3 assists, and 16 turnovers.

Kimball fell to 6-12 on the season while Pine Bluffs improved to 12-4. Pine Bluffs also won the junior varsity game 42-10 led by M. Madden with 14 and A. Borgman with 10. Scoring for Kimball were Charlotte Hargreaves with 4, Chantel Malson and Halsey Clark with 3 each.

PINE BLUFFS BOYS 85 Kimball BOYS 48

The boys game was a lot like the girls game in that Pine Bluffs started 4 seniors and a sophomore and the sophomore was a sharp shooting 6’3” guard by the name of Reed Thompson, younger brother of Hunter Thompson who plays for the Wyoming Cowboys after an illustrious career for the Hornets. Reed Thompson got the Hornets rolling with 3 treys and 12 first quarter points to put the Hornets up 22-14 at the quarter break. He went on to lead all scorers with 24 points and had 7 treys.

It was a dominating night for the Hornet boys as they led 44-23 at half time, and 62-36 after 3 quarters of play. Coach Tyler Kimzey had 9 players get into the scoring act with 3 in double figures including Thompson with 24 and his 7 treys. Michael Shain had 20 points with 1 trey, Justus Golding 13 with 2 treys, Ty Sweeter 9, Alex Slade 7 with 1 trey, Dalton Schaefer 5 with 1 trey, Stu Lerwick 3, Donte Jacobsen 2, and Dominic Paice 2.

A good night shooting for the winners with 12 treys and they were 13/16 at the foul line and held their personal fouls to 15.

Kimball had 25% field goal shooting as the Horns were 17/67, and just 5/28 on 3 pointers along with 9/18 at the foul line. They did out rebound the Hornets 42 to 38, had 9 assists, 7 blocked shots, 4 steals, 14 fouls and 16 turnovers.

Brendan Walker led Kimball scoring with 12 points and had 3 treys. Brayden Tyan had 11 points, Austin Lulf 7 with 1 trey, Jacob Withrow 6 with 1 trey, Sam Cajero 6, Beau Hanks 6. Walker also was high in rebounds with 8 and had 3 assists and 2 steals.

Hanks led the team in blocks with 5 and pulled 6 rebounds. Cajero and Withrow both charted 6 rebounds and 3 assists.

With the win, Pine Bluffs improved their season record to 10 wins and 6 losses while Kimball dropped to 9 wins and 10 losses.

Pine Bluffs also won a 2-quarter junior varsity game 37-26 with Ryan Fornstrom scoring 11 and Ty Sweeter 15. For Kimball Javon Coyle had 12, Thomas Mldoon 7, Cole Heim 5, Cole Henton and Arthur Laveran 2 each.
