2 Longhorns Play Like All-Stars In, Yes, All-Star Games

It was an All Star Basketball night this past Saturday at Cougar palace in Scottsbluff with the staging of the 2019 Panhandle Prep All Star Basketball games featuring both girls and boys of Western Nebraska and Eastern Wyoming with even a South Dakota young man included.

Kimball High was represented by Kate Reader and Izaac Reuter, they both played like All Stars with Reader scoring in double figures with 11 points including four field goals and three for four free thow shooting. She also did a good job rebounding and playing strong defense. Reuter did the same in the boy’s game hitting double figures with 10 points including a pair of three point field goals.

The Kimball All Stars were both on Blue teams and both suffered losses to the red teams with the girl’s game ending up 100-90 and they boys game with a final of 116-109. In both contests the blue teams led until right to the final minutes. It was entertaining basketball, but long with extended quarters of 12 minutes.

Kate Reader expressed that she enjoyed the experience. “I was excited to play once again and with a lot of team mates who I have played against so many times. I was happy with the way we were ahead for so long and thought we were going to win, but it just didn’t work out. It was a fun weekend,” she said.

Izaac said almost the same things. “It was like a fun game! I really enjoyed getting to play with some of my friends from the Pine Bluffs team. I know I wasn’t in the best shape, but I haven’t played a running type sport since my last basketball season. Yes, I really enjoyed getting to play in this game,” he said.

Their basketball is not over yet as both Reader and Reuter have been picked to play this coming Saturday in the Mid Plains Area All Star games being held at the College Gymnasium in North Platte, and then, to their knowledge, their basketball careers are most likely over. It was a fun evening for us fans a well and a very nice crowd turned out to cheer on the All Stars. Great job Kate and Izzac.

I am also still trying to keep up with some final golf happenings and Jordan Greenwood closed out his golf career at Southeast Community College in Beatrice at the Division Two Junior College National Tournament in Indiana with a four day series of scores of 85-84-86-82. You might recall he won the individual low score honor at the Regional Tournament that qualified his team for Nationals.

Not so good news for Jordan’s dad Kenny. Kenny was entered in the Nebraska Senior Men’s Amateur Tournament this past weekend being held at the Wilderness Ridge Golf Course in Lincoln, but after waiting out a four hour rain delay, Kenny then suffered an elbow problem that forced him to withdraw after playing only four holes. He said “Now I want to try and get it well enough so I can join with my sons Jordan and Jeff and play in the Father;s Day Tournament back in Kimball.”

By the way, if you haven’t already signed your three person team up for the Father’s Day Tournament, Get Er Done. This tournament at the Four Winds Course has a lot of history and is one that seems to bring back to Kimball lots of former residents who meet up wit other family members, or friends, to form their three person scramble teams, and enjoy two days of competition on one of the state’s finest courses.

The $100 entry fee per person gets you two days of golf, a chance at 18 flag prizes, a skins game both days per flight, and an evening meal at the Wind Break Restaurant after Saturday play. Golfers can also buy-in for optional day money paid out per flight both days. You can pick your own threesomes to play with on Saturday play to begin at 12 noon and on Sunday it will be a 9 a.m. Start. Sunday’s play will be flighted from Saturday’s scores. The course is in great shape!

The Panhandle Junior Golf play got underway this past week at Bridgeport and although Dillon Wise was not very happy with his round of 88, it still won him top honors in the boy’s 10-12 grade division. Sister Payton Wise also shot 88 but had to settle for fifth place in her girls grade 10-12 division.
