Potter-Dix football ends tough season

The Potter-Dix Coyotes, just coming off a big 54-20 win against South Platte, were defeated by the Leyton Warriors in last Friday’s road conference game between the two rival schools.

Though stats were not available for the Coyotes, the Leyton Warriors were led by senior quarterback Rhett Dye with 180 passing yards, five solo tackles, three assists and the Warriors only two interceptions.

Senior running back Kordell Maestas with 107 rushing yards, 10 receiving yards, four solo tackles and five assists.

Top scorers for the Leyton Warriors include Zach Hellie, who scored a total of 8 points that game with one touchdown and a successful conversion, Kordell Maestas, Morley Haley, and Rhett Dye, all three of whom scored a single touchdown that game, and Kenny Ernest, who scored on a successful two-point conversion play.

The Warriors gained a 14-0 lead during the first quarter and went on to win the game, despite some good plays by the Coyotes, with a 22 point lead.

In the first quarter, the Warriors ruled the game, scoring two consecutive touchdowns and keeping the Coyotes at bay. However, the Coyotes opened up the second quarter with their first touchdown of the night, scoring in the first minute of the quarter.

With a good two-point conversion the game was 14-8 and ball control was given over to the Leyton.

The Warriors didn’t do much with it, though, and were forced to turn it over to the Coyotes on 4th down with 9 yards to go the Coyotes threw an interception. However, this wouldn’t turn out to be unfruitful for Potter-Dix as they were able to hold back the Warriors until they were forced to punt with only 30 seconds left in the second quarter. Soon the board struck zeroes and the third began.

The Coyotes came out into the third quarter with an instant touchdown, scoring as soon as the kickoff landed in the their hands. They attempted a two-point conversion but were unsuccessful and the game was tied 14-14 with possession given over to Leyton.

The Warriors scored fast and hard and quickly gained the lead again, at 20-14 as the third quarter ended.

Leyton scored another touchdown with ten minutes left in the game and then another with just two minutes on the clock. Both two point conversions were good, and the night ended with Potter-Dix defeated during a hard-bought battle, 36-14.
