Family In Nevada, Missouri & Oklahoma Getting Weather Like Ours

Banner County

Good morning, and wow has it ever been cold!

From here in Nebraska where we are accustomed to extreme weather, I have been in touch with family in Nevada, Missouri and Oklahoma – and they have all been experiencing weather much like ours. With that said, it still doesn’t make me feel much better about it all!

Thankfully, I am one of the lucky ones who does not HAVE to go out, and I do not have animals that are out there and needing care.

For those of you that do have to be out, please take care. I think that we are looking to have somewhat of a warm up, at least not those horrid below freezing temperatures.

School was closed last Monday and I was glad it was just for everyone’s safety. Many sports activities were cancelled due to the weather and here is some of what is planned for this week, weather permitting.

Laramie County Community College in Cheyenne is offering a Free “Organic Academy Roadshow” Jan. 18 & 19. This is hosted by the National Center of Appropriate Technology and is for beginner farmers and ranchers that are interested in transitioning operations to organic producing operations.

“The Puzzles of the Past” program will be held at the Legacy of the Plains Museum Friday, Jan. 19, with Mitchell as the focus. They begin at 9 a.m., and the Winter Farmers Market will be there the next day between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

On Friday, the Missoula Children’s Theatre production of “Cinderella” will be at the Midwest Theater and show time is 7 p.m.

The following day at 1:30 p.m. the classic movie “It Happened One Night” will play its commemorative 90th year featuring Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert.

That evening the Midwest will show the movie “Migration.” This will begin at 7 p.m. and is about a family of ducks that decide to move from their home in New England to Jamaica and end up in New York. Sounds like one of the Home Alone movies in cartoon form! It will also play Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m.

Last week some sports activities were cancelled and I don’t know how or if this week’s schedule was affected. However, there were varsity girls and boys basketball competitions planned for the MAC conference in Bridgeport on the 19th, time to be announced.

Saturday, January 20th there will be Music & Movement classes for toddlers and preschoolers at 965 O St. in Gering at 9 a.m.

In Alliance that day will be a Parents Night Out at the Recreation Center. Bring kids to be entertained and taken care of from 6 to 10 p.m.

For our students that Saturday, some will head to Alliance for Speech and some will head to Chadron for high school wrestling.

On Sunday the 21st, Riverstone Bank will host a bake off and wing competition to benefit the Christian Community School. The competition will take place at the Flyover Brewing Company,1824 Broadway in Scottsbluff. Peoples Choice judging will be from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Monday, the 22nd, at the Gering Public Library.

On this same date the band students who will be competing in MAC band will be in Bayard all day. The following day the girls and boys varsity basketball teams are heading to Leyton with the girls playing at 5 p.m. and the boys game to follow.

For interested adults there will be PHD Ag Symposium at the Gering Civic Center on Tuesday, the 23rd hosted by the NPNRD, 308-632-2749. There will be information on what to look for in soil tests, nitrogen in soil, nematodes, diseases and more.

On Wednesday the 24th there will be FFA State Degree interviews in Alliance beginning at 9 a.m. Wishing you all safe travel and good luck in whatever you’re doing!

Here is a heads-up ... NO School on Friday, January 26th!

Have a great week, take care and stay warm. Barb Cross 436-7152.
