Lois was born December 9, 1936 in Chappell, Nebraska to John and Hazel (Bales) Meyer. They lived on a farm south of Lodgepole until Lois was in 3rd grade before moving to a farm northeast of Potter. Lois graduated from Potter High School and then attended Nebraska Wesleyan University where she earned her 2 Year Teaching Certificate. She then taught 4th grade for one year in Gering, Nebraska.
On June 9, 1957 Lois married Merlin Maas at the Potter United Methodist Church and lived on a farm northeast of Potter. She taught elementary school for one year in Gurley before they started a family in 1959 where she then devoted herself full time to providing a wonderful environment to raise a family and managing the many responsibilities of a family farm household. She was an active member of the Potter United Methodist Church for over 40 years where she taught Sunday School, played organ, and used her beautiful voice to sing praises to God. In 2006, they moved to Sidney.
She loved living in their new house where she could still see wide open spaces and nature without having to drive the many miles to town to do shopping and other activities. While in Sidney, they were active members of the Evangelical Free Church.
