Flowerfield School Opens!

Honor Flight Veterans Passing Through Area

Good morning and Happy September! Wow did we ever have rain this past Sunday. Puddles everywhere. Hopefully that will help with the next plantings.

Did anyone make it to the Horizon Music Festival this past weekend? I was lucky enough to go for a while on Saturday and know the stage lights were still on Sunday, rain and all. I was just wondering if the full lineup of artists were able to perform. I sure hope so. What I did see was great and I hope this becomes an annual event.

Here is another question for you: Do you know what the Honor Flight is? There are many folks out there who help organize transportation for veterans to visit Washington, D.C., and if you would like to help, meet at the Scottsbluff Elks Club – today – September 7th, on 1st Avenue and A before 11:45 a.m. You will be handed a large flag and join a lineup which will honor them as they pass through on their way to Denver and then Washington. Honor Flight vets also will be in Kimball at the visitors center from 1:30-2:30 p.m.

Also on the 7th, the Midwest Theater will offer a Free show, “Odd Hours, No Pay, Cool Hat,” which is all about firetrucks. Showtime is 7 p.m.

Our weekends seem to begin on Fridays, and on this one, September 8-10, is the celebration of Chimney Rock Pioneer Days in Bayard. On the 8th there will be a street dance with music by B J Jamison and over the next two days activities will include breakfast, a parade, horseshoe and cornhole tournaments, a movie in the park and more.

Also covering the 8th & 9th will be a Reviving the Heart Ministry Night with 4x MMA World Champion UFC fighter Nate Marquardt. Both evenings at 6:30 p.m. he will speak about additions, trauma, and mental health at the Hampton Inn in Scottsbluff. Everyone is invited.

The Zion Evangelical Church will once again have their Coffee & Crebel sale, so if you are interested, order on the 8th by calling 632-8125 for pick-up the next morning between 8 and 10 a.m. The Farmers Markets on 18th Street and in Morrill will be open Saturday morning the 9th, and and the Riverside Discovery Center will host Deaf & Hard of Hearing Awareness Day between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. This is Free and more information is available at 633-3751.

In Mitchell at the Scenic Knoll Golf Course, golfing will go to a benefit for Jaslynn Parks. Call 623-2468 or 641-2112 for more information.

With the beginning of school local libraries are beginning storytime. At the Gering Library, the time is 10 a.m. on Wednesdays. Scottsbluff is at 10 a.m. and 6:15 p.m. on Thursdays.

The Lied library in Scottsbluff, as a part of the Adult Reading Program, will host “Music from Around the World” with David Marsh on Monday, September 11th at 6 p.m. Everyone is invited.

On Tuesday, the 12th, the Wildcat Hills in conjunction with Nebraska Games & Parks will host a Free preschool program at 10 a.m. This is offered to kids ages 2-6 years old, and a park permit is required to attend. They are available inside the building.

Also on the 13th. the Teen Advisory group will meet at the Gering Library at 3 p.m. where they will enjoy a snack and learn how to make Kool-Aid and lip balm.

There was NO School on Monday in observance of Labor Day. However, things started poppin’ on Tuesday. Flowerfield held its first day of school with approximately 14 Potter-Dix students, and we are under way!

On Thursday September 7th, the 4th graders will go to the Legacy of the Plains Museum for Tools for Technology Day. In sports, the volleyball team is heading to Hemingford (game time at 4 p.m.) and football is at Minatare at 7 p.m.

Friday will be a regular school day, and at noon the cross country team will be competing in Kimball at 4 p.m. and the volleyball team will be in Minatare.
