Upgrades Continue At County Courthouse

Handicap-Accessible Ramp Being Moved To Another Entrance

Improvements and upgrades to the Kimball County Courthouse continue as the county commissioners’ previous approval for the purchase and installation of the chiller and boiler are currently happening. Last summer, the chiller quit and the boiler had reached the end of life for such equipment.

The commissioners voted on Tuesday, June 20, at their regular meeting to move the ADA handicap-accessible ramp from the north entrance of the courthouse to the east entrance. Estimates have been provided for the move.

In addition to the ramp, new parking spots and new ADA-accessible doors will be installed at the east entrance. The old ramp on the north side of the building will be demolished and the sidewalks replaced.

Building and Grounds Superintendent Steve Warner also listed other projects completed, including lighting on the south parking lot, waxing of floors, a server upgrade, courtroom speakers, general cleanup and special election set-up.

New appointments to county boards included Nathaniel Lousberg to replace Andy Bremer on the Veterans Service Committee. Lazah Saunders was appointed to the Kimball-Banner-Cheyenne Extension Board to replace Laura Nelson, who has moved out of the county. Lousberg works for the City of Kimball, and Saunders is the incineration manager at Clean Harbors.

Mobius Communications presented a proposal for an audio system in the commissioners room. The proposal for the installation of microphones and speakers was $7,537.65. The Mobius proposal was approved.

Kimball County Veterans Service Office Program Coordinator Darcee Wheeland gave a monthly report on the Veterans Service Office for January through May. The office now serves 234 veterans in the county. Veterans Service Officer Brian Howard will resign effective July 28, and the search begins for a new officer.

The Planning and Zoning administrator, Sheila Newell, presented her report for May, and Christy Warner updated the commissioners on KCTS.

For the first part of June, KCTS has tallied 1,453 rides, with Year to Date rides at 31,217. The May reimbursement of $169,781 is in review and pending but should be in Kimball County soon.

The next regular meeting for the Kimball County Commissioners will be Wednesday, July 5, due to the July 4 holiday.
