Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First

ON TO STATE: Johnson, McGinnis, Schindler

The Longhorn Wrestlers competed at their district tournament on Friday and Saturday. Feb. 10-11, in Sutherland. After the dust cleared Kimball finished with 3 state qualifiers.

Senior Matthew Johnson was the first to qualify for the state tournament with a dominant 11-0 major decision win in the semifinals. Matthew lost to the wrestler from St. Pats last week at the conference tournament. Matthew then faced the number 2 wrestler from Sutherland in the finals and was tied 4-4 going into the final period before he was caught on his back and pinned to finish as a district runner-up at 106.

James McGinnis was the next to qualify for the state tournament with a dominatnt16-1 technical fall win in the semifinals to advance to the finals. He started slow but poured it on with a minute left in the match to win 10-4. James is the D-4 district champion at 132.

Trey Schindler was the final wrestler on the day to qualify for the state tournament with a first period fall in the semifinals. Trey then won a close contested match in the finals 2-1 over a quality wrestler from Hyannis. Trey is your D-4 district champion at 152.

Cody Brinkman saved his best tournament for the district tournament. After losing his first match of the tournament went on to win 3 straight matches to get to the heartbreak round. He was leading the Bayard wrestler 6-4 with 20 seconds left in the match but got turned to his back and pinned to be eliminated from qualifying for the state tournament. We are very proud of how Cody wrestled and represented Longhorn wrestling.

As a team Kimball finished in 6th place out of 23 schools in the district with 68 points. Kimball was 3 points away from a top 5 finish on the day. Defending class D state champions Sutherland won the district with 174.5 points.

Kimball Wrestlers start their quest for state gold on Thursday. The tournament concludes on Saturday. Matthew Johnson at 106 will wrestle Clayton Scoville, 29-14, freshman from Sumner-Eddyville-Miller. James McGinnis at 132 will take on Wryston Brell, 28-17, junior from Hi-Line.
