Tovar Goes Out Strong

Senior Shines In Longhorns Hoops Finale

The 2021-22 basketball season goes down with three victories in the win column for the young Kimball Longhorns.

The Longhorns, 3-19 overall, ended their year with a 71-32 loss Tuesday, Feb. 22, to eventual champion Leyton in the first round of the D1-12 Subdistrict Tournament. The previous Friday they lost a home nonconference game to Mitchell, 61-30.

Here's a recap.

Mitchell 61,

Kimball 30

Sophomore Wyatt Cords shot 50 percent from the field (5-for-10) and led the Horns with 13 points while grabbing 6 rebounds. Senior Anthony Tovar, playing in his last home game, scored 7 points and led the team with 13 rebounds. Also scoring were junior Kyle Fraser with 6 points and freshman Bransyn Kiefer with 5.

A freshman, Ethan Thyne, went 6 of 11 from the field and paced 8-18 Mitchell with 15 points.

Leyton 71,

Kimball 32

Leyton started the season with a 28-point home win against Kimball back in December, and again opened a big lead to start the game with a 9-0 run. Leyton played fast and aggressively while Kimball struggled on offense, and the Warriors led 26-4 at the end of the first period.

Leyton added 16 points in the second quarter to take a 42-11 lead into halftime. Kimball had a good third quarter offensively, scoring 14 points, but was unable to slow a Leyton offense that added 29 points in the second half in the 71-32 victory.

Tovar led the Longhorns with a mirror image double-double of 15 points and 15 rebounds to finish his senior season big-time.

Other Kimball scorers were Cords with 11 points, Fraser with 4 and sophomore Landon Norberg with 2. Cords also pulled in 8 rebounds.

Junior Dillon Juelfs led the Warriors with 20 points.
