Banner County Notes: Friday The 13th, Full Moon & Makeup Snow Day All At Once

Good morning, Banner County. Spring is in the air and snow is on the ground, skifts anyway. I hope that is all we get and will be exchanging the snow for rain.

This past Sunday evening it rained pretty hard for a while there. My little dog Norman wasn’t quite sure what to make of it. I was loving it.

The speech students at Banner County High will host their annual Sweet and Speech evening in the big gym tonight, March 12, at 6 p.m. They will entertain you with their speech performances and serve something sweet along the way. Everyone is welcome! They will be in Gering on Monday, March 16, for District competition.

The students will all have regular school on Friday, March 13, a makeup snow day. I was reading something the other day about Friday the 13th and the full moon, and what a bummer it is to have it the same day. Well, I guess having a makeup snow day on top of that fits right in with that. At least for the students, staff would be there anyway.

Three other events are happening on the 12th. You can enjoy Coffee with a Cop at Cappuccino & Company in Scottsbluff from 7:30-9 a.m.

Later, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the folks out at North Platte NRD will be having a Tree Care Workshop. Many informative sessions will be presented and I believe you will be able to order trees also.

The third event on this date is at Kimball. A Severe Weather Spotter Training class will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Kimball Library.

On Friday the 13th, the Puzzles of the Past discussion at the Legacy of the Plains Museum in Gering will begin at 9 a.m. The discussion is still surrounding the Hull community. There are several Lenten Fish Frys on this date also: Dalton 5-7 p.m., Mitchell 5:30-7 p.m. and in Kimball from 5:30-7 p.m.

On Saturday, March 14, there will be an Industrial Hemp Forum at the Panhandle Research and Extension Center from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Hemp will be discussed as an alternative crop, the pros and cons. Lunch will be served. I don’t know much about this, however I do buy hemp lotion.

Tickets for the spring musical, which will be performed at the Scottsbluff High School, are still available – and as of March 15 those for the Gering musical will be available also.

Scottsbluff students will perform “Westside Story” April 2-4 and Gering students will perform “The Wizard of Oz” on April 16 and 17. For Gering info, go to http://www.geringschools.net.

Caregivers are invited to the 3rd annual Panhandle Day of Caring at the Harms Center out at WNCC. The Nebraska Respite Network and the Nebraska Caregiver Coalition will bring family caregivers together for several informative sessions and networking. Many vendors will be on hand with info The event is Free and will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Lunch will be provided and if you would like to register, please call 432-8190.

The Western Nebraska Arts Center still has “ Western Beauty” on display in the main gallery through March 29. It might seem a bit early with snow still on the ground, but baseball season is in the air, and registrations and team organization are beginning.

At the YMCA, indoor soccer and summer camp registrations are underway also.

The Harrisburg Community Church is inviting you to a special service on March 22. The Ladies Ensemble and Drama Team from Frontier School of the Bible will be share a special worship service, and everyone is invited. Also the annual spring work day is scheduled for Saturday, March 28, and anyone willing to help is welcome. Pop in and help spruce things up. Donuts will be provided, we are told.
