Lady Longhorns Slip To 5-6 After Weekend Games

It was a two-loss weekend for the Kimball High girls with both defeats coming on the road.

On Friday night, they fell to Bridgeport, 55-45, and on Saturday they went down, 41-28, at Gordon-Rushville.

With the losses, the Lady Longhorns saw their season record dip under the .500 mark at 5-6.

Give a lot of credit to Bridgeport sophomore guard Sydney Nein as she connected from long range for the Lady Bulldogs, ending up with six treys and 22 points. She netted three of those treys in the opening period to get the host team off to a17-10 lead.

By halftime, Bridgeport led 31-16, and it was on top, 42-28, going into the 4th period.

A solid night for senior Kate Reader, who led Kimball with 18 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double.

Sydney Biesecker had 9 points and 8 rebounds. Carli Wurdeman had 7 points with 1 trey, along with team highs in steals and assists with 5 each.

Megan Spicer had 6 points, Madison Wynne 3 points and 9 rebounds, and Lacey Klinkhammer 2 points.

In team stats, Kimball shot well on 2-point fielders, going 19 of 41 for 46 percent, but were only 1 of 13 on 3-point attempts for 8 percebt, and were only 4 of 11 at the line for 36 percent. They did a good job on the boards with 34 rebounds, including 10 offensive. They had 5 blocked shots by 5 different players, nine steals, 10 assists, 20 fouls and too many turnovers with 21.

Along with Nein's 22 points, Brittany Nelson tallied 11, Karissa Benavides 7, Kaeli Mcvicker 4, Ellie Cline 6, and Grace Dobrinski 5. The Lady Bulldogs were 17 of 28 at the line, had 35 rebounds, and held their turnovers to 11.

GORDON-RUSHVILLE 41, Kimball 28

After the trip home from Bridgeport on partially snowy roads, a short night and a long bus ride to Gordon, the Lady Horns suffered their second loss of the weekend to Gordon-Rushville.

Poor shooting and once again too many turnovers hurt the Kimball cause.

The Lady Horns were 9 of 45 from the field for 20 percent, going 2 of 15 on 3 pointers for 13 percent and 8 of 12 at the line for 67 percent. They charted 27 rebounds, had 2 blocks, 10 steals, 4 assists, 25 turnovers and 17 fouls.

No one had double figures scoring for Kimball. Carli Wurdeman and Megan Spicer both had 8 points and Wurdeman hit 2 treys.

Reader ended with 5 points, but was big on the boards with 14 rebounds and had 2 blocked shots.

Klinkhammer had 3 points and Wynne and Biesecker 2 each. (No stats were available for Gordon-Rushville)

This week features play in the SPVA Conference Tournament, and Kimball received a first round home site hosting Chase County this past Tuesday evening. Play continues Thursday through Saturday at Mid-Plains College in North Platte.

On Tuesday, Jan. 22, the Kimball girls will be in action at Mitchell with the JV game set for 4 p.m. followed by the varsity game, girls only.
