Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First

Jock Talk

The local golf season seems to be drawing to a close, at least in the number of golfers that are turning out on a daily basis, but the weather is so nice yet!

Four Winds Pro Chad Wise had a 4-person Yellow Ball-Scrambler, fund raising tournament set up for this past Sunday, but when the sign ups were limited he turned it into just a fun day using the same format.

Very happy to report that the winning team was Tom Southard, Doug Southard, Dennis Hoffman, Dillon Wise shooting 129. The 2nd place team was Kevin Thomas, Gary Haack, Randy Bohac, Steven Linn with 144, and 3rd Place went to the team of Tom O’Brien, Pat O’Brien, Andrew Brown, Barry Frederick with 146. It really was a fun format and all you golfers who didn’t sign up missed out.

Chad has another fun event scheduled for October 20th called Triple Play which is a two person format where each team plays 6 holes of scramble, 6 holes of alternate shot, and 6 holes of Best Ball. It is handicapped and all the blue-white-red tee boxes will be used. Call the Pro Shop and get more info and get signed up.

The Kimball Junior High football season is underway with the coaching staff this fall made up of Dane Wurdeman, Ben Ferguson, and Wade Brashear. Thanks to the coaching staff for providing me with this info on how the season has started off. Their home game with Sutherland scheduled for this Past Tuesday was cancelled because Sutherland was short on players. Next game on the schedule is at Bayard September 25th with a 4 p.m. start time.

The JR. High football team kicked off their season against Hemingford September 4th. We lost the game in a rout 62-0. We just were not ready to play a game at this point. The kids had minimal time for preparation. On a positive note we learned a lot during the game and were a much better team at the end. Wurdeman said “The Kids need to work hard in practice and focus on doing the “little things” right. A shout out to Justin Klosterman for going from center last year to Quarterback this year. He is starting to figure out his new position and will be tough back there in the future. Another shout out to Derek Holt who’s a 7th grader who was put in 4 different positions during the game and did a nice job in all of them. He is the surprise of the year at this point. September 11th the boys played Bridgeport at home in a mixture of 8 man/11 man. We honored the team with the ball. The boys played a much better game. Although we lost the game 40-0 the boys only gave up 8 points in the second half.” Bridgeport had a really good athlete who could run like a deer. The first half we took poor angles and he out ran us. The same player in the second half didn’t hurt us near as bad. We just needed to get some confidence at the beginning of the game. Shout out to Trey Schindler played a nice game making tackles and running the ball. Mitchell Birkhofer played a nice game on the offensive line along with Uziel Flores.
