Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First

Jock Talk

State Tournaments are about all that remains of the High School Basketball season, and already, the wrestling is complete and spring sports practice has officially gotten underway. What’s more, we have some March competition scheduled for you fans. Mark March 17th down for the Chadron State Indoor track and field meet that Kimball, and a lot of area high schools, will take part in. Put March 24th on your sports calendars as the date of the Kimball Invitational track and field meet, and March 29th is also the date for the Bayard C-D meet. March 29th is also the date of the Chase County Golf Invite.

Lots of good things happening in the world of college basketball. The University of Nebraska, Men and Women, are both having good seasons and, hopefully, will make the big tournament. Both are seeded well in the Big 10 Conference Tournaments. Amy Williams was named the Women’s Big 10 Coach of the Year and is in the running for National Coach of the Year! Enjoy Big 10 Tournament play!

Our own, Mike Daum, is still doing great things on the hardwoods. In South Dakota State’s 82-62 win over Western Illinois, he scored 30 points, going 8/15 from the field and 3/5 on 3 pointers, along with 11/15 from the foul line, plus 7 rebounds.

In their last game, the Jacks won over rival South Dakota, 76-72, with Big Mike scoring 20 points on 7/15 shooting, including 2/6 on treys and 4/5 at the line, along with 12 rebounds. South Dakota State won the Summit Conference title outright with their 12-1 record and are 24-6 overall. Mike is the favorite to win Conference Player of the Year, and is already pulling in other outstanding player honors. He is going to wind up with lots of special honors again this season, and he is deserving of everything that comes his way.

We will recap the seasons of our Kimball High basketball and wrestling programs in the weeks ahead, along with giving you an outlook on what to expect from our track and field teams, and boy’s golf, and I can tell you right now, there will be some high expectations from both programs. Bring on the good weather and spring sports!
