The Christmas break is over, a New Year has arrived and it’s time to get the area high school sports action up and going once again. It begins today (Thursday) with the Kimball wrestlers off to Mitchell for the Western Trails Conference Tournament. The wrestlers are also in action this Saturday at the Garden County Tournament.

The Kimball High basketball teams also return to the hardwoods this evening (Thursday) hosting Sidney with JV play set for a 4 p.m. start followed by the girls varsity and 5:30 and the boys varsity at 7 p.m. The FFA chapter will feed you fans and there is also a sophomore cake raffle. On Saturday the Longhorns travel to Chase County for JV games at 3 p.m. followed by the girls varsity at 4:30 and the boys varsity at 6 p.m.

More basketball on Tuesday, Jan. 10, with Kimball hosting Potter-Dix for varsity games only at 5:30 and 7 p.m. TeamMates will be holding a soup supper.

Not a lot more to report, but I can always count on Mike Daum to come through with a story that will interest you readers. The former Kimball High standout had a big game again this past week in leading his South Dakota State Jackrabbits to an exciting 73-72 win over South Dakota. Big Mike scored the winning basket with 2.8 seconds remaining and ended up with 30 points. He was 8/14 from the field with 1 three pointer, 13/16 at the foul line, had seven rebounds and three assists. He is already over the 900 point mark in his college career scoring in just his second year of play. GO BIG MIKE!
