Demolition derby to return with a bang

The Kimball Ag Society will once again host a Demolition Derby, its largest fundraiser, at the Kimball Fairgrounds on Saturday, Sept. 24 beginning at 3 p.m., with a beer garden opening at 1 p.m.

Last year there were 25 participants, 15 the year prior and in 2013 there were 50, according to event co-organizer Doug Lukassen.

“They say that Demo Derbies are coming back,” Lukassen said. “I am expecting around 30 cars.”

Preregistration is not required, but Lukassen added that it helps if drivers call in advance so organizers are prepared.

“We will have good attendance. They seem to really come out and support it,” Lukassen said. “I would really just like to thank all the spectators, our attendance at the demo derby is always great.”

A new addition this year is a Power Wheels derby for youngsters, aged five to 11, as well.

Parents must register interested youth and all Power Wheels must be stock car-based vehicles, as opposed to ATV style Power Wheels, with no upgrades.

Participants will be required to wear full pants, closed-toe shoes and bicycle helmets.

The number of heats in the Power Wheels derby will be determined by the number of participants, with no more than 10 drivers in each 10-minute heat. The top three drivers will be named first, second and third place of each heat with no main event.

Balloons will be securely taped to the center of the front and back of each vehicle. When both balloons are popped, the driver is done. When a driver is eliminated they will be expected to remain in their vehicle until the end of the heat with their flags raised.

All children will receive prizes and awards and all parents are encouraged to mentor their children in good sportsmanship.

Sponsors will be announced, and must be reported prior to the beginning of the event.
