Lady Coyotes rout Minatare, advance in MAC tourney

Potter-Dix used its swarming defense to create plenty of offensive opportunities on Monday.

The Lady Coyotes (10-2) stormed out to a 13-2 lead and went on to thump visiting Minatare, 57-25, in the first round of the Minuteman Activities Conference tournament. Top-seeded Potter-Dix returns to action in the second round of the tournament Thursday to face Bayard at 3 p.m.

A Savannah Shaw jumper less than a minute into the game started the scoring, and the Lady Coyotes were off and running. After a pair of Anna McLaughlin free throws put Potter-Dix up 4-2, Audrey Jeulfs added the first of many buckets off Minatare turnovers as she took the pass from Shaw after a steal to go up 6-2. McLaughlin's steal seconds later led to a Shaw jumper, and Shaw's fast break bucket from another Lady Coyote steal gave the home team a 10-2 lead. Dawson Sharman picked off yet another Lady Indian pass and went the other way for a 12-2 lead, and Trinity Langley's foul shot gave Potter-Dix a 13-2 advantage with 4:15 left in the opening quarter. The Lady Coyotes led 18-7 heading into the second quarter.

As dominant as the Lady Coyotes were in the first frame, they were even moreso in the second. They opened with 14 consecutive points, including the first five baskets from steals, as they raced to a 33-9 halftime lead. Jeulfs picked off a Minatare pass and went the other way for a fast break bucket that started the scoring, and then scored another fast break basket on a Lady Coyote theft for a 22-7 lead. Sharman forced a turnover and went the other way for a layup, followed by a McLaughlin theft that led to a Jeulfs fast break bucket, and another Jeulfs layup from her own steal for a 28-7 Potter-Dix advantage with 5:30 left until halftime.

McLaughlin's jumper and two Sharman free throws put the Lady Coyotes up 32-7. They led 33-9 at the break.

Ten Lady Coyotes found the scoring column in the win, led by Juelfs and McLaughlin with 10 points each. Juelfs also had a team-high 10 assists for the double-double, while Lewis led the team with 10 rebounds.
