  • Top Five Ag Stories Of 2012

    Jan 3, 2013

The dry conditions that began in May and then escalated into a drought of historic proportions is the state’s top agriculture story of 2012, Nebraska Farm Bureau said in releasing its annual list of the Top 5 Nebraska Agriculture News Stories of the Year. “The drought has gripped Nebraska from border-to-border and every farmer and rancher in the state has been impacted in some form or fashion,” said Steve Nelson, Nebraska Farm Bureau president. “It was and is still clearly on the minds of our members as they look at the prospect of continu...

  • Tax Relief, Reform Discussed At Nebraska Farm Bureau Meeting

    Jan 3, 2013

Nebraska Farm Bureau’s voting delegates reiterated their support for efforts to reform Nebraska’s tax system as a means to provide tax relief and help enhance Nebraska’s economic competitiveness. Property tax relief was chief among concerns discussed by delegates to the Nebraska Farm Bureau Convention held December 3-4, in Kearney. “When it comes to funding for schools, roads and other local infrastructure funded through property taxes, Nebraska farmers and ranchers continue to carry a disproportionate share of the property tax load in rural a...

  • The Name Says It All

There’s no pretense about this place. Why should there be in little Hershey, Nebraska? But even the name—Butch’s—conjures mental images of a portly, no nonsense shop owner in a stained white apron plying his cleaver in the days of neighborhood joints and “Father Knows Best.” And, yes, it is a steakhouse, which wedges the Hershey mainstay into an already crowded file of small town grills serving choice, glistening slabs of red meat. Order a strip or ribeye and you know what to expect. Eve...

If whiskey is perfect, there is no reason for flavored versions. Yet distilleries persist… Black Velvet is a leftover from the days when languid women splashed across slick magazine advertising pages to lure Sports Illustrated readers into the vice-ridden world of blended whiskey—if they could tear themselves from the Borkum Riff or smokeless tobacco adds on the facing page. Black Velvet’s Toasted Caramel delves into the same novice market. Regional whiskeys carry hints of grain, barrel, age and the very climate in which they were born. Flavo...

What can one say about a story so awkward, yet at the same time so human and emotionally engaging? Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones play a devoted couple drifting into marital complacency. Kay—Streep’s character—looks to reconnect with her husband through the device of a small town therapist. Of course, Jones’ more stubborn, routine-driven part resists. The result is sad, predictable, cringe-worthy, funny and at times rings with absolute clarity. Yes, the predictable, cringe-worthy aspect may frustrate some. On the other hand, Streep and Jon...

  • State Recognizes School Veterans Day Performances

    Jan 3, 2013

Kimball Public Schools, Potter-Dix and more than 200 Nebraska schools are being recognized by Secretary of State John Gale for hosting Veterans Day events this year. Teachers say these events continue to be well received by students, their communities and more importantly, local veterans. Many schools invite servicemen and women to share their experiences during those programs. “They can be quite moving for those in attendance,” said Gale. “It’s really something for those veterans to see how young people respond to their stories. It’s a...

Nick Stull’s ride began in the dusty small town rings of Nebraska’s high school rodeo circuit. It ended on the national stage. A win at Mitchell nudged the Kimball saddle bronc rider into the top four. He knew what was at stake as the final go loomed at state. In the first round he watched as points leader Chauncy Hesseltine of Thedford held on for full time, the only cowboy to earn points. The next day Stull again hit the dirt. Meanwhile Triston Eklund topped the board--again the only com...

The calendar year ended with a form of redemption for Kimball, as the Longhorns pounded Hershey on December 14--nine months after the Panthers knocked them out of playoff contention in the 2011-12 district finals. It was a year of emotion and accomplishment: a new crop of Kimball starters capturing the school’s sixth consecutive WTC title, their first win over Chadron in perhaps two decades, Potter-Dix’s Ty Ottoson repeatedly topping 30 points per game, Longhorns’ head coach Bruce Tjosvold’s 100...

Before the start of 2012’s volleyball schedule, senior hitter Emily Poss promised that Kimball would be hard to beat come the regular season. After the first triangular, her words seemed prophetic. The Longhorns topped Garden County and the Bulldogs—again—to take their record on the young season to 3-0. They faced Bridgeport in the nightcap, taking control 25-19 in the first before battling to a 25-20 win in the second. But the third set against Garden County put Kimball’s newfound confidence on...

The track and field season passed by in a flash as the likes of Taylor Holz, Dalton Lockwood, Peppiina Raisanen and Brent Bussinger blazed a trail to Omaha. In all, Potter-Dix sent 11 to state, Kimball seven and Banner County four. Even before the schedule began, Potter-Dix’s Holz made news by signing a national letter of intent to run for the University of Wyoming. She proceeded to dominate the field in both the 100 meter dash and 100 meter hurdles on her way to an invitation to Omaha. At Mitchell in early April, for example, Holz won the 1...

Just a few days into the new year and several minutes after securing a 51-46 road win over Pine Bluffs, Kimball girls center Tori Reader barely managed a smile. The game had swayed for the longest time in a sweltering gym. And Kimball had already suffered through several disappointing “almosts” throughout December. “It was probably our best win of the season,” she said, adding “I was extremely worried.” She needn’t have been. Kimball romped through the rest of January on their way to a WTC titl...

Fall did not start well for Kimball. Both North Platte St. Patrick’s and Hershey stymied the Longhorns offense, big Jake Reader--tagged as quarterback to begin the season--went down with an injury and Cambridge planted 56 on the board...all before Kimball managed to score its first points of the season. This moment came in the fourth quarter of the third game, when Trent Rutledge sacked Trojans quarterback Taylor Kubik in the end zone for a safety. But Jonathon Withrow tacked on a touchdown, followed by a second from Colton Stull and a t...

January of 2012 began with local squads struggling. Last season, after all, was a rebuilding year for both Kimball and Banner County, despite some impressive outings. The Wildcats’ David Gifford captured podiums, as did Kimball’s Lance Winters. Then freshman Rowdy Keller, Jonathon Withrow and Tatum Morgan ended the 2011-2012 year above the .500 mark. Kimball, as a team, finished at 104-126 in head to head matches. At districts, Winters struggled, ending the year with an 15-11 record. Keller won two matches but also dropped a pair. Tristan Car...

Four local runners emerged from the district cross country meet with trips to Kearney. Kimball’s Laura Flores and Amanda Harrison of Banner County had relatively comfortable times, completing the Pheasant Run course outside Grant in 5th and 9th places, respectively. For Longhorns boys team leaders Ryan Muneio and Mitchell Shields, the outcome was a little more dicey. Muneio jumped out to an early lead and held on for almost a mile. At the top end of the blistery course, Paxton’s Garrett Perlinge...

That Kimball’s golfers would advance to Kearney was never in serious doubt. Entering the 2012 golf schedule the Longhorns had appeared in nine consecutive state tournaments. To win their third straight district crown required a little fortitude, however. “I didn’t expect to win after the last few weeks,” admitted coach Aaron Delhay, referencing some uncharacteristically inconsistent play from his top golfers in recent invites. Kimball fended off a charge by runner-up Valentine at the West Wind G...

From the very beginning, Kimball expected to battle Bridgeport for a place at state. Also from the first swing, Brooke Hager figured on another trip to Columbus. Right on both counts. The opening rounds of golf also gave Aaron Delhay’s squad some hope for knocking off their rivals by the time districts rolled around. The result—trailing Bridgeport 426 to 488 on Bayard’s Chimney Rock course, with Hager placing fourth on the leader board—earned an approving nod from Delhay and almost every Longhorn…with one unanimous caveat: “for the first time...

January 2012 When an electrical component fails to do what it is supposed to do, trouble inevitably follows. Kimball’s city administrator Harold Farrar and Bob Selzer of the Nebraska Municipal Power Pool (NMPP) know this fact well--as does anyone driving past the stilled wind farm outside of town. Recently a recloser attached to the turbines malfunctioned. As the purpose of a recloser is to shut faulty circuit breakers and ensure continued flow of power, the incident allowed a surge that blew a city breaker. When that went down it caused an o...
