Lady Coyotes open post-break with 2 wins

The Potter-Dix defense smothered another opponent on Saturday.

The Lady Coyotes (7-1) held yet another opponent below 30 points as they rolled to a 47-26 win against visiting South Platte. Potter-Dix has held five of its opponents to 30 or fewer points on the season and seven of its eight opponents have not scored 40 points. The Lady Coyotes are 7-0 when holding opponents to fewer than 40 points.

"Our press and half court defense created many turnovers which made it hard for them to get into their half court offense and also we only gave up one layup in transition," Potter-Dix coach Jeff Einspahr said. "Our defense has been a positive for our team this year. We work hard in practice on our presses and half court defense everyday."

Potter-Dix held a 9-5 first quarter lead and added to that advantage in the second period. The Lady Coyotes led 17-7 with 3:22 left in the first half and went up 19-9 on a jumper from Savannah Shaw. They led 20-11 at the break.

Anna McLaughlin's jumper started the second half scoring for a 22-11 advantage, and added another jumper for a 24-14 lead at the 3:45 mark of the third quarter. The second McLaughlin jumper started a 9-1 Potter-Dix run to end the third quarter. The Lady Coyotes also had baskets from Alexus Rozelle and Dawson Sharman, and a putback from Cortney Lewis extended the lead to 30-15. A Brooke Glass free throw gave the Lady Coyotes a 31-15 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Sharman led the Lady Coyotes with 12 points, while Rozelle added nine.

Potter-Dix was without point guard and leading scorer Audrey Juelfs in the two games to open play after the break, and Einspahr was pleased with how his team responded in her absence.

"The whole team stepped up their game while Audrey has been out, specifically Dawson Sharman moved into Audrey's point guard position against Bayard and South Platte and did an excellent job for us," Einspahr said.

According to Einspahr, the Lady Coyotes' hard work over the break paid off with the 2-0 start.

"The girls worked hard in practice over break to stay in shape and focused on their game," he said.
