Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First

Jock Talk

The Kimball junior high winter sports is still underway and entertaining you fans, but the Kimball High School sports is ready to bust loose this next week with the basketball teams headed to Gering and I am not sure what format they will use. I know last time we went it was more like a scrimmage with no score kept on the score board, or in the book. The teams wore their practice uniforms and unless you knew the players, you were in the dark as to who was doing what. The girl’s game will start at 5:30 this Monday-November 26th, and the boy’s game follows at 7 p.m.

The longhorn wrestling team opens their season at Bayard in dual competition on November 29th with a 6 p.m. start time. On November 30 and December 1, Kimball will host their 4 school basketball tournament with girls and boys divisions and we will bring you the bracket in next week’s paper.

Following the Thanksgiving break, the junior high girls basketball team is at Morrill on Tuesday-November 27, and that same day, the junior high wrestlers are at Bayard with an early start time of 9 a.m. The girls play begins at 4 p.m.

The last game I followed involving our Mike Daum saw his South Dakota State Jackrabbits lose to Florida Gulf Coast 84-78. Big Mike had some early foul trouble and sat for quite a while getting only 22 minutes of court time. He still scored 18 points going 7/15 from the field including 2/3 on 3 pointers, and 2/3 at the foul line. He also had 7 rebounds before he fouled out.

The Kimball School system and the Kimball Community lost a good man with the death of Jim Reeves who served as the Elementary Counselor for the Mary Lynch School. My association with Jim was when I talked sports with him when he kept the score book or ran the score clock at Kimball basketball games, and also when we talked track at the Kimball track meets. Jim was the long distance coach for the Longhorn track team and he did a good job and was very involved with his runners.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone and be sure and overeat! Also, be sure and cheer the Huskers to victory over Iowa on Friday!
