NEVER FORGOTTEN

Kimball Remembers Its Veterans On Memorial Day

A solemn ceremony honoring those who died in the service of their country was held Monday, Memorial Day, at the Kimball Cemetery.

About 125 people attended the event, which began with 2023 graduate Emma Patterson singing the national anthem, Mayor John Morrison saying a few words of welcome, and Randy Bohac providing the beginning prayer and benediction.

VFW member Larry Engstrom raised the flag to full staff, and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary placed a wreath to honor all those who served in the military.

Speaker Matt Shoup, a veteran of wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, documented the history of Decoration Day, which began in 1868 after the Civil War.

“We owe it to our veterans to care for them,” he said, reminded the crowd of the “profound cost of freedom.”

Shoup read a list of veterans who died from May 2022 to May 2023. Those veterans were Frank Forsyth, Daniel McGinnis, Fred Baltensperger, Robert Moul, Noia Brown, Wayne Schildhauer, Vincent Heeg, Ed Killham and Joel Linn.

The ceremony concluded with Jayden Paxton playing taps and the final 21-gun salute.

The Kimball VFW Post 2243 prepared and served hamburgers after the Memorial Day service.
