Reduced Bond Request Denied

After a second motion to review the bond for manslaughter suspect William Shane Serrano on Friday, Aug. 19, District Court Judge Derek Weimer ruling said, “The court has considered the defendant's most recent motion for bond review. The bond continues as previously set.”

Serrano appeared in person in Kimball District Court on Aug. 19 for the review bond hearing.

Serrano stands accused of five felony counts, including manslaughter, attempted first degree murder, and attempted terroristic threats. He is accused in the shooting death of his girlfriend, Tessa Ghering, at their Kimball home in January.

The motion filed by Serrano's attorney Kelly Breen from the Nebraska Commission on Public Advocacy stated that, “Defendant suffers gravely from cholesterolosis, which causes polyps which stick to the walls of his gallbladder and has caused intermittent internal bleeding.”

Breen asked for the bond to be changed from $100,000, 10% cash, to $20,000 with 10% cash.

Kimball County Attorney Dave Wilson was also in attendance. Judge Derek Weimer as well as state attorney Doug Warner, defense attorney Staci Bach appeared via Zoom.

Breen stated that Serrano was not a threat due to his physical condition.

Prosecutor Warner said it was the second review of his bond and repeated he has a history of violence and asked that the judge not change the bond.

According to the court documents submitted by the defense, the defendant has been treated in the last six months at numerous medical facilities, including Cheyenne Regional Hospital, UH-Loveland Medical Center, Scotts Bluff Adult Detention Center, D & E medical facility, Bryan LGH West and Kimball Health Clinic.

Serrano will be in court again on Nov. 1 for a status hearing.
