Grateful For Volunteers Fighting Wildfires

Banner County

Good morning, back here in a heat wave. Still not as hot as it was, and people in Texas or Missouri have the heat plus the humidity, so there is that.

With a few rain showers that are hit and miss, it was really no surprise that the lightning carrying on Saturday evening started quite a fire just north of us once again.

Several small fires, really.

At this time (July 31), it is still going and I do not know the full extent of the damages. However, I sympathize with those who have suffered loss of any kind and want to express our gratitude to all volunteers involved.

In this week’s itinerary of “things to do,” one of them is not quite in our immediate area, but I thought I would mention it anyway. It is in Valentine.

On August 4th. a Thursday, the Merritt Reservoir SRA will host “Spectacular Stars, Magnificent Moths, Nocturnal Insects.” It will be from 3-8:30 p.m. at the Snake River Shelter and will involve bright lights and white bed sheets for “moth lighting.” Moth species will be gathered and identified, then released. Might be an interesting road trip.

Closer to home, Midwest Theater will present “Where The Crawdads Sing” on August 6 & 7th at 7 p.m. and as a matinee on the 8th at 1:30 p.m. The question is, “Did she do it? and if not Who did?” On those same dates at 8:45 p.m. the SkyView Drive-In will be playing “DC League of Super Pets.”

Saturday, August 6th, the High Plains Auto Club will hold a classic car cruise by meeting at the Dairy Queen in Scottsbluff at 5 p.m. for social hour, then cruising at 6 p.m.

At the Scotts Bluff County Fairgrounds in Mitchell on August 4th – tonight! – the American Christian band named I Am They will be performing at 7 p.m. Also at the same place on Monday, August 8th, there will be the 3rd. annual UNITE Night of Worship, which will begin at 6 p.m. and include 13 different churches. Everyone is invited to either or both events.

On Tuesday, August 9th, the Farmers Market will be open in Morrill at the FOMO Park from 3- 6 p.m., and later that night there will be a Park After Dark Astronomy Program at the Scotts Bluff National Monument. It is Free and open to the public beginning at 8:45 p.m. There will be great telescopes, Lakota & Pawnee constellation stories and constellation information. Bring your flashlight and bug spray!

August 8 to 13th will be fun dates because the Old West Balloon Festival will be high in the sky. A couple of days are reserved and not open to the public for U. S. National Competitions. However, on the 10th from 6-9 p.m., there will be a Night Glow out at WNCC and on both the 12th & 13th at the Mitchell Airfield there will be a Mass Ascension from 5:30 - 9 a.m. Closing night will be at the Five Rocks Amphitheater on the 13th with a Night Glow beginning at sunset.

Some area County Fairs to take note of are: Garden County Aug 4th to 8th; Box Butte August 6th to 13th and Kimball-Banner County August 8th to 15th.

The Post Playhouse will have a few more performances and for time and date of your favorite, please call 1-888-665-1976. Play choices are: “Damn Yankees,” “Desperate Measures,” The Sound of Music,” “Church Basement Ladies” and “Something Rotten!”

Well folks, whatever you do or don’t do, have a great week and take care until next time. Barb Cross at 436-7152.
