Important Issues At Clean Harbors

Two significant matters, one a proposed development and one a permit renewal, are unfolding five miles south of Kimball at Clean Harbors Environmental Services Inc.

Clean Harbors has applied to the the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy to begin construction of the foundation for a new incinerator, a proposed development that has gained much attention in the Kimball area.

Copies of that application are available to review or obtain from the department.

Mike Chrisenbery, Clean Harbors vice president of environmental compliance, discussed this major project with the Observer. He said the foundation requires “lots of concrete,” and he indicated that concrete is actually in short supply.

In addition, Clean Harbors is in the process of renewing its existing permit, as required every two and a half years, and this includes a hazardous waste permit and an air permit. This permitting process is to verify that operations are being conducted as they should.

Clean Harbors has submitted its annual Confirmatory Performance Test Plan to the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy. The plan is available for inspection from June 20 to Aug. 26. According to a press release from Clean Harbors, the plan will be completed during the week of August 22.
