This Year’s Kimball Longhorns Squad Still Seeking First Victory
This year marks the 50th Anniversary of the Nebraska State High School Volleyball Championships.
The Nebraska Schools Activities Association would like to commemorate this milestone by having the high schools honor and recognize former players and state champion teams at a home game.
Kimball Public Schools plans to recognize its 1979 Class B State Champion volleyball team at the Oct. 7 home game against the Morrill Lions.
All former Kimball volleyball players get in for free and members from the 1979 championship team will be recognized between the second and third sets of the varsity match.
Game times are 5 p.m. for JV and 6 p.m. for varsity.
“If you haven’t been here recently, you will love the changes to the gym floor and to the student center,” coach Jeri Ferguson said. “We really hope you can join us Thursday night Oct. 7 to help us celebrate 50 years of Nebraska State volleyball championships.
Sutherland

Kimball’s Lady Longhorns volleyball team has a had a difficult start to their season, going winless in eight tries prior to traveling to Sutherland to take on the Lady Sailors. Although they battled hard and the match concluded with a hard-fought third set, the Kimball girls still remain winless.
Sutherland took the first set from Kimball, pulling away for a final score of 25-18. The second set offered much of the same, with Kimball faltering and Sutherland taking the second set 25--15.
But the third set was much closer, with a few good rallies by Kimball, and the Lady Longhorns kept the pressure up through the set. Sutherland was finally able to put the set away 25-22 for the 3-0 match victory.
Senior Amy Birkhofer led the Kimball offense with 10 kills while junior Jayden Paxton had four ace serves for the Lady Longhorns. Senior Riley Hinton did a good job setting with 10 assists in the match.
The Lady Longhorns were scheduled to host 7=5 Hershey on Tuesday.
