Busy Days In The Burg And These Parts

Good morning Banner County! Beautiful here in Western Nebraska right now. We need more rain, but then so do many states in the Midwest all the way to California.

Here is a little bit of what is happening in our neck of the woods. Story time is beginning at the Lied Library in Scottsbluff, and on Thursday the 9th they will have “Wild Critters” for the pre-school kids from 10-10:30 a.m. and again at 6:15-6:45 p.m.

The After School Art program is beginning at the Western Nebraska Arts Center for students grades 1-6 beginning on Friday, Sept. 10.

The folks over in Bayard are having a celebration September 10-12 called Chimney Rock Pioneer Days. They will have a parade, class reunions and much more over the weekend. Search for the event online for more details.

Over the 11th & 12th, the Gordon Willow Tree Festival will be taking place in the Winship Park and more info is available at http://www.visitsheridancounty.com/.

The farmers market is still open on Saturday, the 11th from 8-11 a.m. at the 18th street mall in Scottsbluff.

Beginning on the 11th of September through the 30th there will be a display at the Fraternal Hall Museum in Kimball through the Smithsonian Institute, their traveling Exhibit. This exhibit is “Crossroads: Change in Rural America.”The museum is at 200 S. Chestnut.

Also on the 11th, the Riverside Zoo will host a Deaf and Hard of Hearing Awareness Day with Free admission from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. On that evening the SkyView Drive-In will host a Community Volunteer Appreciation Event. The gates open at 6:30 and the movie “Same Kind of Different as Me” will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Sunday, September 12 is Community Fishing Night, courtesy of the Nebraska Game and Park and is Free and open to the public. Fishing time is 4-6 p.m. at the Riverside Zoo Park Pond, and they say to look for the Family Fishing Trailer.

The Goodhand Theatre in Kimball will host Gary Miracle on Sunday, September 12th at 6:30 p.m. This gentleman has a story to tell. If you are familiar with the singing group, Mercy Me you will enjoy this story deriving from their 2021 Spring album and a horrible situation involving septic shock.

On Monday, Sept. 13 rehearsals for the Fortis Boy Choir and the Valley Voices Children’s and Adult Choirs will take place at the Summit Christian College, 2025 21st street, Gering. Time for children is 5:15-6:30 p.m .; boys 6:30-6:50 p.m. and adults 7:15-8:30 p.m. For more information, please go to http://www.fortisbc.org.

In the Main Gallery at the Western Nebraska Arts Center through September 26 is an exhibit titled “Elemental Discoveries,” presented by Doug Hoevet and G.E. Sommerfeld artists who “take nature and transform it into artwork.”

In the Bronson Gallery, “Rebound: New Beginnings” is an exhibit of open media work by a group of artists, non-juried, and the focus is on fresh starts and second chances.

Here at home the Van Pelt reunion will take place at the Museum picnic area on Sunday, September 12th beginning at 12:30 p.m. If you live close bring a hot dish, if further away, bring something cold. All will be good! Tableware and bottled water will be provided. You’re welcome to bring kids games, and horseshoes will be provided by the museum.

On the sports page at the schoolhouse, Thursday, Sept. 9 the high school volleyball team will take on Leyton and Hemingford here at home beginning at 4 p.m. The following day the cross country team will be in Kimball at 1 p.m. and that evening the high school football team will take on Crawford here at home. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

On Monday the 13th, more sports here at home with junior high volleyball at 2 p.m. and football at 3 p.m. The opponent is Hay Springs. The following day, there will be more cross country at Bridgeport and at 5 p.m. the junior high volleyball team will play in Gurley with Leyton.

The FFA group will be busy this week also with an Edge Conference at 7 p.m. on the 13th and Range Judging on the 15th. Good luck and safe travel to all of you.

There will also be a school board meeting on Monday, Sept. 13th at 7 p.m.
