Cemetery Concerns Discussed

Residents, Officials Gather At Special Cemetery Board Meeting

Usually, the Kimball Cemetery Board meets on a quarterly basis, but recent complaints from the public on the conditions at the cemetery instigated a special meeting.

About a dozen citizens attended the noon July 22 meeting at the Kimball County Transit building, and many voiced their concerns.

As the board discussed bids on a new sprinkler system, various questions and answers were exchanged between the board and citizens. One sprinkler bid had been received, and the city is awaiting an additional bid.

The current sprinkler system is antiquated, inefficient, and fights sand in the sprinkles, plus a broken water line adds to the watering problem.

To try to remedy the situation immediately, 600 new heads will be installed, and watering will continue nightly on the 40 acres.

Many comments and questions were answered by the board during the discussion on the sprinkler system, but before adjourning the meeting, the board heard public comments.

In addition to the watering issues, weeds and general conditions, one resident mentioned that her father died in November, and his grave does not have the sod replaced or grass planted.

The board appeared to be concerned and willing to make changes. They plan to "work with the attorney," check out the legal issues, and having a liability waiver drawn up for individuals to volunteer to work at the cemetery.

No employee issues were discussed, although the city has only one full-time employee at the cemetery.

The next quarterly meeting will be in August.
