Records Fall In P-D Win Over Minatare

Coyote Boys Split, Girls Looking To Get On Track

Potter-Dix’s Coyote basketball teams hosted the Sedgwick County Cougars last Tuesday night for the the Cougars’ first action of the season due to Colorado’s decision to delay the start of the winter sports schedule. The layoff seemed to have no effect on the visitors, as the Lady Cougars cruised to a 59-18 win and the boys team defeated a surging Coyotes squad fresh off of a MAC Tournament championship.

Sedgwick County started fast and put up 25 points before the Lady Coyotes put up a score of their own, pressuring the Potter-Dix squad into 20 turnovers in the first half alone. Leading 42-7 at the half, the Lady Cougars built the lead and started the 40-point running clock halfway through the third quarter, and cruised through the rest of the game and took the 59-18 win for their first victory of the season.

Sophomore Kallie Crossman led Potter-Dix with four points in the loss, and the Lady Coyotes record dropped to 1-13 on the season.

In the boys game, Sedgwick started fast, fueled by senior Jared Ehmke’s 10 first quarter points to open a 13-8 lead at the end of the first period. But Potter-Dix fought back, and went on a 6-0 run to take a lead at 14-13. Sedgwick county immediately countered with a 13-0 run of its own, and never trailed again on their way to 53-40 victory.

Potter-Dix sophomore Luke Kasten led the Coyotes with 16 points in the loss.

Next up on Saturday the Coyotes visited the Minatare Indians, and the struggling Lady Coyotes looked for their first victory since a double-overtime win against Creek Valley earlier in the season. But the Lady Indians’ defense played well enough to limit the Lady Coyotes’ scoring opportunities and pulled out a 49-40 victory to drop Potter-Dix’s record to 1-14 on the season.

The boys matchup was another story, however, as the Coyotes opened a five point 19-14 lead at the end of the first quarter and built a 38-25 lead at the half and then finished the game with 40 points in the second half for a 78-57 victory.

Kasten broke a 32-year-old scoring record by pouring in 46 points in the victory. Kasten also grabbed 20 rebounds in the win for the double-double. Senior Javon Coyle also broke the record for assists in the game with 16, and had eight points and 10 rebounds in the victory.

The Coyotes improved their record to 11-4, and the Coyote teams are scheduled to host Creek Valley on Thursday.
