Banner County Writer Says The Grinch Influences My Sister & Was Spotted On Street Corner

Good morning Banner County! You know how some days or weeks seem to drag and at other times they seem to fly by? Well this week was a fly-by one for me.

It seemed like I went from Monday to Saturday. Boom. I am thinking that this one is going to be pretty much the same. All that hustle and bustle that this season brings.

My one sister is having a hard time not being a grinch this year. Says with no snow she just can’t get in the mood. I felt that way last year, but in spite of the beautiful weather that we are having, I have been ready for this season since Halloween!

Some events are being cancelled, but some are still hanging in there and that helps. The 2nd annual Chair-ity event is still in progress at the Western Nebraska Arts Center and they will also host, along with the Nebraska Arts Council, the Nebraska Cultural Endowment, and Bob and Sue Van Newkirk a presentation titled “A Visual Diary: A Collection of Thoughts on Canvas.” This is the work of Julie Nighswonger of Torrington. Many Nighwongers hail from Banner County. Everyone is invited to the gallery opening reception Tonight! 7 p.m. The exhibit will continue through Jan. 3.

Friday, the 11th, two movies will be shown at the SkyView Drive-In beginning at 5:50 p.m. “ The Land Before Time” is first and at 7:30 p.m. the film is “Unaccompanied Minors.”

There will also be two movies the following night, same times. The first one is “ Elf “ and the second is “ Dr. Suess and How The Grinch Stole Christmas.” Gates open 45 minutes before the first showing.

Speaking of that Grinch. Last Saturday evening while at a stop light in Gering, waiting with parents to cross the street stood the Grinch. He/she was about 4 feet tall and very, very green. Also on Friday, December 11th at 7 p.m. if you connect to wncc.edu/community/performing you will be able to enjoy virtually the WNCC 2020 “ Very Valley Christmas .” A Christmas tradition for many in the area.

The Knights Museum and Sandhills Center in Alliance has cancelled the annual Christmas Festival held there and the Drive-In Concert in Alliance has been postponed until a later date. The Winters Market will be going full force out at the Monument Mall on Saturday from 11 a.m. -to 2 p.m., and that evening the First State Bank will host “Wild Lights at the Riverside Discovery Center.” The lights will be bright and cherry from 5-7 p.m. outside and activities will be held inside. This will take place at the same time the following evening.

The Bachs Lunch & Dinner is still on schedule for the 14th, Monday at noon and for tickets go to http://www.thewnac.com. Locally, we lost a long time resident with the passing of “ Bob” Robert Gifford Sr. Our condolences to the family. School wise this week high school wrestling will take place on Friday, December 11th in North Platte and the junior varsity boys basketball team will travel to Bayard for a 4 p.m. game. This basketball team will travel once again on Tuesday, December 15th to Morrill, game time 6 p.m. on that evening. Safe travel and good luck!

The regular school board meeting will be held on Monday, December 14th at 7 p.m., and on the 15th the 6th grade class will hold their Entrepreneurship Extravaganza at the school from 4-6 p.m.

Birthdays this week include: Debra Griebe, George James McGowan, Charles Jones, Kathy Van Pelt, Jeremy Brown, Kash Farro, Jane Baker, Gay Olsen and Brindley Lind.

Happy Birthday!

Well that’s all for now. Take care until next time.
