Steamrolling Potter-Dix Crushes Wallace; Cody-Gilgore Up Next

The streaking Potter-Dix Coyotes added another notch to their win column Friday when they defeated the visiting Wallace Wildcats, 66-34, to advance to the quarterfinals of the state Class D6 playoffs.

The second round of playoffs has 9-0 Potter-Dix hosting 5-2 Cody-Kilgore at 5 p.m. Friday. Cody-Kilgore defeated Stuart, 30-0, in its playoff opener. The winner of the Potter-Dix/Cody-Kilgore game faces the winner of the McCool Junction/Paxton game.

Senior Javon Coyle, the transfer from Kimball, had a huge game on both sides of the ball for the Coyotes. He ran three times for 56 yards, caught five passes for 195 yards, gained 33 kick return yards, scored five touchdowns, was in on 11 total tackles, and had two sacks.

Sophomore quarterback Luke Kasten also continued his memorable season as a force for the Coyotes. He completed 11 of 21 passes for 280 yards and eight touchdowns. He also rushed 10 times for 112 yards and was in on six total tackles.

Other Potter-Dix leaders included senior Donald Moench with 12 runs for 84 yards and a touchdown plus four receptions for 23 yards and eight total tackles, junior Jared Anton with four receptions for 81 yards and four touchdowns plus seven total tackles, and senior Brandon Mendoza with five total tackles, an interception, a fumble recovery, a field goal and three extra points.

Last Friday's game started with the Coyotes managing the field well. The first score attempt of the game was earned by the Coyotes at 7:37 in the first quarter by Luke Kasten. The play was called back on a holding call. About 40 seconds later, the Coyotes reclaimed their presence in the end zone with a Kasten touchdown pass.

The Coyotes returned to scoring position at 5:19 in the first quarter with Coyle scoring on a run from near midfield. The score was now 14-0 favoring the Coyotes. About two minutes later, the Potter-Dix offense was back on the board following a 34-yard run to increase the lead to 20-0.

The Wildcats earned their first touchdown of the quarter with just under three minutes left. The point-after attempt failed and the score was 20-6.

But the Coyotes weren't done with the first quarter. With 47 seconds on the clock, the Coyotes' Coyle scored on a touchdown pass. The quarter ended with the Coyotes scoring again for a 26-6 lead.

At 5:53 in the second quarter, the score was 34-6 with the Coyotes appearing to be in a comfortable lead. The lead expanded to 40-14 when the Wildcats returned a kick to earn a touchdown and narrow the margin by six for a 40-22 half.

Potter-Dix earned 26 points in the second half while keeping Wallace to 12 points scored with the Coyotes resting their starters.
