Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First

Jock Talk

The most exciting thing to happen this week, or month, year, or maybe the past decade, is the Kimball High Girls Golf Team qualifying for the State Tournament! Be sure and read the complete story concerning how they did this, but as I write my column this week it is really all I can think of.

I did not make the trip down to Ogallala to cover it in person as things are so restricted with the COVID-19 situation that I didn’t know they would allow me to be to the players and coaches anyway, but I was in contact with the right people who kept me informed as I was playing golf myself at the Four Winds, and was able to relay results with my 12-noon golf league friends. I will admit I had chills as I heard the team qualified and what Payton Wise had accomplished on this day, shooting her very own personal best round ever of 76 to better her own school record, and once again claim the District individual medalist honors! Congrats Payton! What an awesome accomplishment!

Mens’s Golf

Okay, on to other happenings, and again, thanks to Randy Bohac for passing along the results of the last combined golf scramble of the two men’s golf leagues that was held this past Sunday afternoon at the Four Winds Golf Course.

As Randy mentioned in his results he sent my way, the 30 golfers who participated and enjoyed perfect weather for their final event of the season, and some good scores were turned in.

The format Sunday was six 5-man scramble teams and the winning team was Dillon Wise, Don Trofholz, Randy Bohac, Steve Linn, Royce Crossman shooting a round of 9 under par 63. The runnerup team was just 1 stroke back with a 64 and that team was made up of Kevin Thomas, Steve Pattison, Kelly Garrett, Lanny Little, Roger Dohse. The 3rd place team was just 1 more stroke back with a round of 65 and this team was Bill Hinton, Mike Coleman, Gary Haack, Terry Lovesee, Mike Winstrom. Randy sends out a huge thank you to all of the golfers who came out and played to support the Four Winds Golf Course. And to all you golfers, the course is in magnificent condition and the weather has been quite nice so keep enjoying the game and the course.

Senior Salute

A salute going out from the Observer to the Senior athletes and their parents who were recognized at this past Friday nights Kimball-Bayard football game. The 6 senior football players and parents who were recognized were Christian Allen-VanPelt, Jaren Barnes, Cole Henton, Zander Hottell, Corey Gardner and Ethan Ratzlaff. The two senior girl golfers and parents were Maddie Cook and Brooklin Golding, and the two cross country athletes and parents were Connor Cluff and Raven Johnson. Thank you to all of you seniors for your work and leadership in your respective sports.

Mary James: A Great Lady

Another event that took place this past Saturday down in Dix was a large turnout to show support for Mary James, a highly respected 92-year young lady who has had some problems through the years that the community decided needed to be addressed. There was a large turnout including different motorcycle groups, and even law enforcement who joined in and enjoyed the great food prepared by Mark Whetham. Karen and I went to say Hi to Mary, and I worked hand-in-hand with Mary for many years as she would get the results of the Women’s Golf League to me so I could report them in the Observer sports. Her mind is still so sharp. Great Lady!

Kimball Football

The Kimball High football team is hurting for numbers and when they lose someone to injuries it leaves another big hole that hurts the cause even more. A young man that moved into Kimball just this year and is a very good all around athlete by the name of Roy Tarango Trevizo is the latest to suffer a season ending injury of a broken leg, and the young man who came in from Colorado is reportedly a very good basketball player and he needs to get well quick as coach Chad Miller will need him in a BIG WAY!

A look at the Kimball sports schedule this week. The cross country team is at the SPVA meet in Grant today (Thursday) and then at Bridgeport tomorrow (Friday) for the WTC Conference meet. High school volleyball at Morrill this evening at 4 p.m. and junior high volleyball at home with Pine Bluffs at 4 p.m. The Longhorn football team is at Hyannis Friday evening.

On Monday-October 12 and Tuesday- October 13, girls state golf at Columbus and the Kimball Girls will be there as a team! Junior High volleyball at Bayard Monday, and High School volleyball at  home on Tuesday-Oct. 13, versus Chase County at 4 p.m.

Did I mention the Kimball High Girls Golf Team qualified for the State Tournament in Columbus to be held October 12-13? Oh, and also, Payton Wise was the District medalist and shot her all time best round of 76 to improve her own School record. Wow!
