P-D Football Powers To 4-0 Start

Potter-Dix's Coyote Football team continued their undefeated start and moved to 4-and-0 on the season by defeating the favored Arthur County Wolves at Combs Field Friday night. The two high-powered offenses squared off, with the Wolves scoring first early to take a 6-to-0 lead. Both defenses played well in the early going, with Potter-Dix sophomores Conner Glanz and Anthony Tovar chasing down and hurrying Arthur County junior quarterback Bryce Hanna and limiting big plays. The Wolves led 14-to-6 going into the second quarter, but the Coyotes tied the score at 14 with four minutes left in the second quarter and Potter-Dix was able to put two more touchdowns on the board while shutting down the Wolves' offense to go into the half with a 28-to-14 lead. Coyote sophomore quarterback Luke Kasten continued his stellar play through the second half, scrambling for big yards and connecting on passes to Tovar, senior Javon Coyle and juniors Niko Koon and Jared Anton while throwing short passes to senior running back Donnie Moench. While the Coyote's racked up the yards and the points, the defensive pressure continued, forcing five turnovers on downs for the Wolves. Potter-Dix opened up a 20 point lead, and kept the margin steady, answering every Arthur County score to keep the game out of reach, and ending the game with a victory by a final score of 52-to-32. Potter-Dix Head Coach Dale Frerichs said, "We felt we had a good game plan and the kids did a great job executing.  Arthur County is a good team and they have good coaches and players, so we knew we would have to play a complete game to be successful. We did have some kids who had great individual stats but it took the whole team to get the victory." Outstanding performances by Kasten with 218 and Coyle 242 all purpose yards aside, it was the defensive effort that turned the flow of the game, when the Coyote defense was able to force a series of turnovers on downs and open a twenty point lead in the third quarter. The defense was well prepared to counter the Arthur County attack. Frerichs said, "I would like to especially recognize our scout team players for their efforts Monday-Thursday preparing us for Friday night. They do a great job." The Coyotes next travel to face the 3-and-1 South Platte Blue Knights Friday night, and Frerichs said, "They are 3-1 and also have good coaches and players. It will take another great week of practice and a complete game on Friday for us to be successful."
