Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First

Annual Banner School Book Fair Oct. 5-12

Good morning, Banner County friends near and far. Beautiful today, and for the first time in many days we have clear skies, no smoke!

We are having a few cool days here and there, but the lawn mower and the pumpkins are still competing for first place in the scheme of life.

Farmers markets are still open in a few places.Today, the 1st of October, they are in Torrington and on the 3rd & the 6th in Morrill. Other than that I think they are beginning to shut down.

The 8th Harvest Moon festival in Chadron will take place all day at the Dawes County fairgrounds this Saturday, October 3rd. and on that same date at the fairgrounds in Torrington the Goshen County Master Gardeners will host the ‘greatest pumpkin’ challenge at noon in the Frontier Shelter building. As far as I know Charlie Brown will not be competing.

This is the 5th year for that event. Also in Torrington on that date and through the 17th the annual book sale will begin at the local library, located at 2017 E. A St.

At the Gering Public Library, they are inviting all kids 13 and up to come to the library at 1 p.m. on the 3rd and build a haunted terrarium, which will take about three hours to complete, graveyard and all.

New openings at the Western Nebraska Arts Center include The Art of Rubbish exhibit: Artist re purposing of Junk which will be in the Main Gallery. Opening night will be Tonight, October 1st from 5-7 p.m. This is free and open to the public.

Since colder weather is soon upon us the folks at Regional West medical are having their annual drive- through flu shot clinic on October 3rd from 8-11 a.m. at the South entrance.

The Nebraska Chamber’s Virtual Fall Forums will be held on Thursday, October 7th from 8-9:30 a.m. bringing state leaders, businesses, and candidates together before the elections. Sign up for your forum by calling 402-474-4422.

Here at home, sports events at the school include: cross country on the 1st at 2:30 p.m. in Bayard; high school football on the 2nd at 1 p.m. in Arthur, and junior high volleyball on the 7th in South Platte at 2 p.m. Safe travel and good luck to all of you.

Also on the 7th it is ‘walk at school’ day, so depending on the weather you may see students around town so beware! The annual Book Fair at the school will begin on the 5th and continue through the 12th in the school library.

Just a heads up: school will dismiss early on next Thursday, October 8th for parent-teacher conferences and there will be No School the following day. I always personally call this a day of recovery.

Happy Happy Birthday this week to Katharine Nelson, Sharon Sandberg, Irene Cross, Bob Cooper, Ashley Talkington, Rylie Mason, Logan Mason, Taylor Evans, and Amy Lease.

Anniversary congratulations to Mr. & Mr.’s Brian Luppen and Jonathan Vrtatko.

Have a great week everyone and take care until next time.
