Longhorn Golfers WTC Champs

Double Medalist Payton Wise Leads The Way

The Kimball Lady Longhorn golf team racked up another win in capturing the championship of the Western Trails Conference Tournament held at Mitchell this past Thursday shooting the low team score of 401!

Kimball's Payton Wise was the individual champion with her best round of the season to date shooting 41-40=81 and Kimball's top four varsity golfers all made the top ten medal group with Katie Heeg finishing 5th with her round of 50-53=103, Maddie Cook was 8th with a round of 52-54=106, and Brooklin Golding was 10th with a round of 53-58=111. Sophomore Keara O'Brien also had a nice round of 64-56=120 to round out Kimball scoring.

Kimball finished 8 strokes ahead of runnerup Mitchell with their score of 409, followed by Gordon/Rushville with 440, and Bridgeport with 473. The remaining WTC teams did not have enough golfers to register a team score.

The other top ten golfers were Jacque-Mitchell 2nd at 88, Shelby Hurlburt- Gordon 3rd with 95, Lexi Schledewitz-Mitchell 4th with 98, Abby Burns-Gordon 6th with 103, McKinnley Knotts-Mitchell 7th with 104, and Kylie Coomes-Gordon 9th with 109.

Mitchell Invite

Along with the Western Trails Conference Tournament, another division and tournament listed as the Mitchell Invite was scored with Alliance winning the top team honors with their round of 390 leaving Kimball in the runner up spot with their 401.

Payton Wise was the medalist in the division as well with her sparkling round of 81 but no other Kimball golfer made the top ten medal group in the Mitchell Invite division.

Other schools involved, plus the WTC schools, were Chadron, Creek Valley, Gering JV, Sidney, Garden County, Scottsbluff JV, and Alliance.

In commenting on the play of her Kimball team, coach Katie Culek was quick to single out her number one player, Payton Wise.

"I am especially happy with Payton Wise today," the coach said. "She has struggled a bit trying to get her scores down where she knows she can play but today she really came on. I am also happy for all of the girls as they did what they needed to do to get into the top ten medal group and to win the team championship."

The Kimball girls were back in action at the Gering Tournament this past Tuesday and will be at Ogallala this coming Tuesday, September 22. They close out the regular season on September 24 at Bridgeport before District play on October 5-6 at Ogallala.
