This Week's Sports Rewind: April 14, 1968

Looking back 52 years ago, this is a story I read on my KIMB Radio Sports show. It concerns my coverage of the Sidney Invitational Track and Field meet.

The names of Pat O’Brien and Barry Frederick should be recognized to even you newcomers to the Kimball area as they are both still residents and quite active in our community, but I can guarantee they are not as fast now as they were back in their glory days!

April 14, 1968

Darrell Brown shone for the Longhorns in the Sidney Invitation track and field meet held yesterday in Sidney, as the Kimball thin clads finished second behind a strong Sidney Red Raider team in Group 2.

Brown won both hurdle events, setting a new record in the highs in 15.3, erasing the old mark of 15.6 held by Tom George of Bayard established in 1965. The 15.3 clocking also ties the school record held by Bob McCarty.

Brown’s winning time in the low hurdless was 20.8 seconds, as he edged out teammate Pat O’Brien, who ran second in 21 flat.

Mike Lantzer far outdistanced the pack in the 2-mile run, winning in the record breaking time of 10:54, erasing the old mark set last year by Rich Long of Kimball, which was 11:07. Lantzer almost eclipsed the school mark of 10:52.4 held by Long.

Doug Moehr won the mile in 4:57.6. O’Brien ran second in the 440 in 54 flat. Rich Wailin placed third in the shot put at 46’4” and also scored in the discuss. Art Steward placed fourth in the long jump at 20’1-1/2”.

Barry Frederick ran third in the 220 in 23.8, Harvey Miller finished 5th in 24.4. Morry Absher ran second in the 880 in 2:07.

Dave Stairs ran fourth in the 100-yard dash in the time of 10.5, and Frederick finished fifth in 10.6. Stairs also picked up points in the discuss for the Longhorns.

Kimball’s 880 relay team made up of Miller, Frederick, Brown and O’Brien won their specialty in 1:35.3 … The two mile relay team finished second in 9:04.6 … and the mile relay team placed third in 3:41.5.

Team scoring had Sidney winning with 94, Kimball second with 67, Bridgeport third with 46, Grant fourth with 27, Holyoke fifth with 22 and Haxtun sixth with 16.

Next Saturday the Longhorns go to Bayard for the North Platte Valley Conference meet.
