Tom Southard Reports On Kimball Track Records In 1967 KIMB Newsletter

Here we have the "KIMB SPORTS ... by Tom Southard" report from the April 10, 1967, KIMB-AM 1260 newsletter. Tom, once the former station's sports director and an Observer sports writing legend, pulled this report from his personal collection.

In the Alliance Invitational track and field meet at Alliance Saturday, Kimball set two new school records and tied one.

Bob McCarty ran a 15.3 flight of 120 yard high hurdles to erase his old record of 15.5, and was good enough for second place in the meet.

Stan Ebel erased his old mark set a week ago in the 880 with a winning time of 2:02.1. The old record held by Ebel was 2:02.9.

Pat O'Brien ran a second in the 180 yard low hurdles with a 20.8 in and tied the school record held by McCarty. Henry Jennings was the big point getter for the Longhorns winning the shot put with a heave of 47'9 1/2", and taking third in the discus at 131'10 ½"

Outstanding marks of the meet were the 13 feet 8-1/2 vault by Jeff Menuey of Alliance ... the 9.9 clocking in the 100 yard dash by Doug Marcy of Hay Springs, and the 50.8 440 by Tim Pfenning of Bayard. All three either set or tied overall meet marks.

Doug Moehr ran a 4:55.3 mile at the Sidney freshman Invitational Saturday to set a new meet mark and proved to be the highlight of the Kimball effort.

Coach Jerry Beguin and his junior high track squad won handily over Bridgeport in a dual meet Saturday held at Bridgeport. Final score was Kimball 81 and Bridgeport 43.

Kimball archers fared quite well again yesterday at the University of Wyoming Invitational archery "Fun" Shoot, held at Laramie.

Juanita Wosika won first in the Women's Wyoming Round ... Lee Roy Brown finished first in the Animal Safari team shoot, with Lee Wallin second and Irene Wallin third. Hugh Kenney captured the Gamble Round championship.

David Brown was first in the Rabbit Round and was the only junior shooter there competing with the men. He defeated one of Laramie's top shooter after firing three tie offs.

Little League registration will be held tonight at 7:00 at the West Elementary School. Parent or guardian must accompany youngster, and you are asked to bring the $3 insurance fee along if possible.

A little bit more here on the Alliance Invitational ... The class A division was won by Alliance with 81 points, McCook had 67 1/2, Kimball 40, Sidney 36, Gering 34, and the Scottsbluff reserves 12 1/2. Hay Springs edged out Bayard 64 to 60 to win the class B trophy.

Kimball High School golf suffered a little over the weekend finishing last at the North Platte Invitational Friday and last at Alliance Saturday.
