Lady Longhorns Fall In Subdistrict Final, Season Ends

The Kimball High Girls Basketball season came to an end this past week in the sub-district finals losing to South Platte 45-17. The Lady Longhorns had advanced to the championship game by virtue of their first round win over Perkins County, 46-31. The season concluded for the Kimball ladies with a record of 8 wins and 13 losses.

Kimball got out to an early lead over Perkins County and were on top 12-4 after one quarter of play and never trailed as they picked up their first round victory over the Lady Plainswomen in play held at Ogallala.

Coach Chauncey Pedersen was content with the win, in most respects, but said, “ We didn’t shoot well at the foul line again, going 9/24 for 38%”.

Kimball was 16/44 from the field for 36% and was 5/17 on 3 ponters for 29%. They also charted 24 rebounds, had 17 steals, 14 assists, 13 fouls, and 14 turnovers.

Carli Wurdeman led Kimball, scoring 14 points including 2 treys. With her 10 rebounds it gave her a double-double for the game. Megan Spicer was in double figures scoring with 12 points. Sam Bemis had 7 points plus 7 steals and 7 assists, Sydney Biesecker finished with 5 points with 1 trey, Payton Wise 5 with 1 trey, Amy Birkhofer 2, and Katie Heeg 1. Heeg also had 4 steals and 5 assists.

The girls from Big Springs dominated in their win over Kimball with their defense holding Kimball to their lowest number of the season. The Lady Longhorns stayed close in the first quarter and trailed 6-4 after the first 8 minutes of play, but then the winners took complete control to lead 19-6 at halftime.

Not a good night shooting for Kimball as they were 7/31 from the field for 23% and 0/8 on 3 point attempts, along with 3/12 at the foul line for 25%.

In other team stats, Kimball was hurt by 24 turnovers, had 20 rebounds, 3 assists, 19 fouls, and the only bright spot was their 15 steals.

No one in double figure scoring with Wurdeman high with 6 points, Spicer had 3, Bemis, Maddison, Merryfield, Jenna Greenwood, and Heeg all with 2 points each. Wise and Wurdeman had 4 rebounds each and Wurdeman also charted 5 steals.

South Platte had 7 players score led by Dickmander with 16 and K. Brown with 11. With the win, South Platte moved into a District playoff to determine if they advanced to state tournament play.
