Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First

You Can Kiss It Goodbye

Good morning Banner County, and here we are kissing the month of February goodbye. We even have an extra day and it still is short and has gone by pretty fast.

It is still yet to be seen as to whether March will bring us kite flying weather or high winds that blow millions of tumbleweeds and move a good part of Wyoming into Nebraska.

This school year has been an interesting one here at Harrisburg with the four day school week. They do have five day weeks occasionally, and this week is one of both. School was scheduled for Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. However, the school was open on Wednesday with several students and many students and staff from surrounding schools in attendance as Banner County School hosted District Speech. It’s the “regular” four day school week for most only with a split in the middle of the week, instead of having an optional Friday, and regular classes all four days.

On Saturday, February 29, those Speech students will be on their way to Mitchell for competition there.

Wednesday, March 4, is District CDE for FFA students and this will be held in Kimball and begin at 9 a.m. That is all for the local events.

Next week is even shorter because Parent-Teacher conferences will be held on Thursday, March 5, and there will be No School on Friday, March 6, recovery day. Conference times are from 2-5 p.m. and from 6-8 p.m.

Up north and over the hill, the Omaha Symphony Chamber Concert will be going on at the Midwest Theater. They will be playing on February 27 at 7:30 p.m. and the music will be from the era of Mozart combined with the voices of modern contemporary composers. This begins the weekend.

On the following day, Friday, February 28, the folks at the Church of Christ will offer a Free soup dinner beginning at 5:30 p.m. They are located at 1919 Ave. N in Scottsbluff.

On Saturday, the Scottsbluff Safety Building, located South of the Post Office, will be conducting car seat checkups if you are in the area and need that done. The service is free and will be given from 9 a.m. until noon.

Saturday is also a day that many people look forward to. I do not, however. I am always interested in the results after the day is over.

It is the 9th Annual Polar Plunge. Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m. and those brave (or crazy) folks will plunge at 10:45. This all taking place at the Riverside Park and will benefit the Special Olympics of Nebraska organization.

On that same date, from 5-8 p.m. the 4-H Shooters Club will host a soup supper at the 16th Empire. Well, that finishes out February.

March 1 begins the Nebraska Wheat Board Annual Bake & Take month. Free recipe cards and information is available by calling 402-471-2358, or going to [email protected].

The musicals performed by Gering, Scottsbluff, and Kimball high school students are enjoyed by many of us and this year’s musical in Scottsbluff will be West Side Story. They will be performing in April, but tickets will be available soon by going to www.ronne.com.

The St. Agnes Church in Scottsbluff will be having a Penny Carnival on March 1st beginning at 11:30 a.m. As of Monday, March 2, you who are interested will be able to sign up for the Environmental Quality Incentives Program.  This widely applied conservation program in Nebraska must be signed up for by March 13, and to do that you need to contact your local USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service.

The Job Fair that we talked about last week will take place out at WNCC on Tuesday, March 3. The Spring Job and Internship Fair will be held at the Harms Center from 2-5 p.m.

Well, that is all that I have other than wishing a Happy Birthday to: Tina McKeehan, Keaton Fisher, Jerren Yazdgerdi, Wyatt Reichenberg, Riley, Smith, Camden Knaub, Kage Mosby, and Comron Yazdgerdi.

Happy anniversary to Mr. & Mrs. Don Cashler. Sometimes nine years seems like thirty-six.

Catch you all next week, have a great week and take care until next time.
